Phillyist Interviews... Fred Mascherino (a/k/a The Color Fred)

How could Phillyist not love Fred Mascherino, perhaps better known by the name of his current project, The Color Fred? The 34-year-old local—a Temple alum raised in Coatesville, lest you question his local 'cred'—gained local notoriety with Breaking Pangaea and a national following from his work with Taking Back Sunday. So it's not surprising that we've covered Fred before, and we'll continue covering him when we get the chance.

Strange Philly Legends

When most rock fans think of Tom Morello, they probably think of Rage Against the Machine. Some might think of Audioslave. Very few will think of Morello's folk-rock alter-ego, The Nightwatchman (MySpace). But when Rage Against the Machine—always voraciously political and activist, both personally and musically—gave way to the apolitical Audioslave, the outspoken and outrageously intelligent Morello sought an outlet to express his politics musically. That outlet first came in the form of playing original folk-inspired protest songs at a Los Angeles coffee house open mic night. And there, The Nightwatchman project came to be.

With Rise Against (MySpace), you've got to expect everything to be in your face: the attitude, the music, and the politics. So we weren't at all surprised when we walked into the Electric Factory and the first thing we saw was a table where PETA was handing out pamphlets about how meat is the number one cause of global warming. We tend to agree more with the PETA and with Anthony Bourdain when it comes to vegetarianism, but it's just part of the deal with Rise Against. So, accepting that...

Did you ever get with someone you hardly know to “If You Don’t Know Me By Now?” Ever satisfy your love jones to “Me and Mrs. Jones?” Have you ever gotten some ass to Teddy Pendergrass? No? Well, that is probably because you had me as a wing man. But, if you have, you need to head down to Macy’s Center City at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7 and give some dap to the men who made all that baby-making possible. Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the founders of Philadelphia’s own Philadelphia International Records and soon-to-be members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, will be on hand for a meet-and-greet, and a $35 IZOD men’s purchase will net you a signed, 15-song compilation of the city institution’s greatest hits. What does IZOD have to do with Philadelphia International Records? Dude, I don’t know. All I’m saying is, if you buy yourself a pair of pants, I guarantee you will hear some mind-blowing music…and there will be some body-rockin', knockin-the-boots going on at your crib this weekend.

Despite their name, NYC four-piece Vampire Weekend (MySpace) is not a shoe-gazing, emo goth band. In fact, their self-titled debut LP, just released at the end of last month, is perhaps best described as "sunny" - the very antithesis of a vampire's idea of a good weekend. This band, beloved of many blogs (including us), performs bouncy, funny, clever, retro indie/punk/pop/New Wave songs about love. Their music is so fun it feels like there has to be something wrong with it, but nothing is. It's been a while since we listened to an album the first time through, and loved every song on it instantly. (Although of course we did love some more than others; the head-bopping "A-Punk," which they performed live on Letterman just the other night, is the best, and "One (Blake's Got a New Face)" is the worst.) If you haven't got your copy of the album yet, hit the R5 Productions website to download some free MP3s.

Last year's For the Love of Pig Iron benefit show, "PIG FEAT!" was one of the best performances we saw all year. This one-night-only variety show featured drag acts, dancing, music, and the most spirited, competitive, live auction we've ever seen. We knew we'd be back in 2008.

We had very high hopes when we made our way to the Electric Factory for Y-Rock on XPN's FREEZEtival 2008. After all, Louis XIV (MySpace) delivers smart, edgy electro-rock, Editors' (MySpace) first two albums have gotten some pretty good critical reviews, and Hot Hot Heat (MySpace) is one of those bands that we remember enjoying like five years ago and lost track of, so we were eager to hear what they've been up to.

It got cold all of a sudden, didn't it? We had a nice little mild winter going—just like we'd asked for—for a little while. But suddenly, it's, well, winter in Philadelphia. And winter means one thing: frigid, freezing weather. So, appropriately, Y-Rock on XPN is bringing FREEZEtival 2008 to the Electric Factory tomorrow night.
