Location: Rittenhouse Square

Hey Mr. Policeman

So, I'm siting in Rittenhouse Square with an out-of-town friend, and an angry middle aged dude suddenly rushes at an old homeless man. They're screaming, grabbing onto each other, shoving, and a trash can goes flying. And it seems like nobody else in the park notices.

Phillyist Tricks and Treats

It's that wonderful time of year again.

Parking

This week, I will do the obvious and write about Rittenhouse Square. Everyone who has spent more than ten seconds in our fair city has heard of Rittenhouse, right? Heck, Robert Downey even made a documentary about the park, so you needn't have even been here to have heard about and gotten some sense of the experience in the park. But, still, it's unfair of me to ignore a park because it's popular or because I have some unspoken agenda to introduce you all to the smaller, more neighborhoody parks that abound in Philly. I cannot be a park snob. So, Rittenhouse: this week is your week.

  • Proofreading Philly

A few weeks ago, several Phillyists convened at The Black Sheep Pub in Rittenhouse for some good ol' fashioned Johnny Goodtimes Quizzo. We came in second and caught a lot of ex post facto ire for our team size—but that's neither here nor there. This post is about the menu at the Black Sheep, which was full of grammatical errors. This one may have been the most egregious, not just because of the use of a possessive rather than a plural, but because of its proximity to the correct pluralization.

    Foodsday Tuesday: Prime-al Urges

Last week, your Phillyist editors headed down to the lounge at Stephen Starr's Barclay Prime (shown above in all its gentlemen's smoking club glory) to check out the upscale steakhouse's new pub menu. It's tough work, we know, but some bloggers gotta do it. Although not exactly what you'd consider cheap eats (menu prices range from $9 to $29), we certainly weren't let down by the offerings. The juicy mini burgers, made from a combination of meats you wouldn't usually consider grinding, were a portent of things to come: the actual pub menu features a $19 dry-aged burger with cheddar and a side of tater tots. We weren't sure we'd be paying twenty bucks for a full-sized version of the burger we ate, but then the addition of the homemade, perfectly crunchy tater tots (which, admittedly, were a little cold by the time we got to them—but miraculously not soggy) may make it worth the ticket price. More impressive to us, though, was the truffled mac and cheese, a $16 concoction that includes smoky Neuske bacon and fresh English peas. We couldn't get enough. In fact, we may have even snagged second portions of the carb-laden cheesy dish when the very friendly staff came around with trays of the stuff.

Foodsday Tuesday: Don't Pass on Pesach

Ah, Passover. That lovely time of year where God—via a series of biblical writings and ancient rules—tells you to go on Atkins. (Unless you eat lots and lots of Matzah—that stuff is pretty carb-heavy.)

Local Philly fav Brown Betty in NoLibs, is opening Brown Betty Petite today in Rittenhouse. The petite size shop only serves cupcakes, but they’re not your plain ‘ol vanilla and chocolate. • The Daily News has a happy follow-up to its story about people getting their grills stolen in Tacony—a number of good Samaritans stepped forward to donate new grills.
  • Poor Philly. We've been named the city with the most unattractive people, the fattest, and the most miserable. But, finally we've caught a break. Walkscore.com—an online tool to help people find great neighborhoods to live in—named Philadelphia the fifth most walkable city in the country. San Francisco was number one on the list, with New York and Boston coming in second and third, respectively. Although, one has to wonder how San Francisco is so walkable with all those hills. They’re definitely not easy on the knees.
