What's that you say? Phillyist really digs Rhett Miller (MySpace), frontman of the Old 97's? No! Why would you say that?

Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2009 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know!

I am thoroughly convinced that for his solo shows, when there's no percussion onstage, Rhett Miller uses his hair to help him keep time. It seems to have a mind of its own, swirling around his head and over his eyes as he energetically plays the songs that his fans know every word to. His isn't '80s headbanger hair: it starts out perfectly feathered and carefully blown-dry, but as Miller performs, it becomes drenched in sweat, spraying the members of the audience who dare to stand in the front row. Miller may be playing a solo show, but there are two very visible personalities on that stage. (At one point halfway through his set, he mentioned that his hair was getting in his eyes and he needed to get it cut. Not too short, I hope – what would he use as a metronome then?)

What's not to love about Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller? He's attractive. He's talented. He's wired. He's charismatic. He's a Texan. (Hush, you – the president is not representative of the entire state.) AND, he's going to be back in our fair city on Saturday night.

Spring is when we get busy here in the Ist-A-Verse. Very busy. But, after staying bundled-up indoors all winter, it's nice for us to be out, about, and collecting things to write about for you. Here's a glimpse at what's been keeping your favorite citybloggers busily away from home and out of bed.

We here at Phillyist like to think that we've got pretty good taste in music. (Most of the time, at least.) As such, we also like to think that when we hear a song that really hooks us, we should pass our discovery along to you, our readers. Our latest discovery came in the form of Gran Bel Fisher's single, "Moment," from his debut album, Full Moon Cigarette. For half a second, we thought we...

I always love when people from my beloved home state do cool things. I feel that in some ways, it helps put us back in the positive light that many people feel our President has dragged us out of. And Rhett Miller is one such Texan. But before I get to him and his rockin' show at the World Cafe Live last night, I just wanted to touch briefly on his opener, AM.

sure of when we first saw lead singer Rhett Miller perform solo. It was the 2003 Singer-Songwriter (now All About the Music) Festival, and we were blown away. He played many of our favorite Old 97's songs, and a lot of songs we'd never heard before. In short, we were hooked. And lucky us, Rhett Miller will be back in Philly tonight at the World Cafe Live! And luckier you, tickets still seem to be available.
