Foodsday Tuesday: Another Restaurant Week

First came Center City Restaurant Week. Then came South Jersey Restaurant Week. Legal drama ensued between the two Restaurant Weeks. And when that was done, even more legal drama ensued, this time kept within South Jersey. But really, all we want is a drama-free, food-filled Restaurant Week. Something reflective of our more laid-back temperament. Maybe something new, or at least someplace that doesn't generally get a whole lot of attention. Thanks to the New Kensington Community Development Corporation and Phoodie.info, our wish has been granted in the form of the Riverward Restaurant Week, which runs from this Friday, May 1, to next Wednesday, May 6. (Yes, the timing of the restaurant "week" to span two weeks and not run a complete week is a little odd, but apparently this was due to some scheduling issues.)

Lately, it's kind of seemed like it's always Restaurant Week—but then 2008 went by in a blur, so maybe it's just us. But today, at least, it's not just us, because Restaurant Week is once again on the horizon. The restaurant list features old favorites and new additions alike, and even though the price has gone up a bit in the last few years, we still think most restaurants put out special price-fixed menus that are tough to beat for $35 (plus tax, alcohol, and tip—of course).

At first glance, the details about the upcoming Center City District Restaurant Week look the same as always. So does the list of participating restaurants. What has changed, though? The cost of your prix fixe dinner will now be $35 instead of $30.

Restaurant Week, a.k.a. one more reason that this Phillyist isn't going on a diet until mid-October, starts on Sunday, and reservations are going fast! We had hell finding reservations that fit into our schedule (but were finally able to go with our first choice restaurant!), and advise you strongly not to delay another minute in planning your delicious (and deliciously underpriced!) three-course meal. There are a lot of new restaurants on the list this year, but even the usual suspects seem to have changed their menus this time around.

I have been waiting for tonight for a long time.

Phillyist loves Restaurant Week. Like, a lot. (Seriously, that was only the first three links that came up when searching for "Restaurant Week" in the Phillyist archives.) Unfortunately, Restaurant Week only happens twice a year. And it's not actually a full week when it does happen.

Earlier this week, I celebrated Restaurant Week by hitting up Astral Plane with some Phillyists. My food was wonderful, and the dining room’s décor was comfy and adorable. But, trust you me, if there is one room in that place that truly reflects the restaurant’s name, the dining room it ain’t.

Today marks the third day of Restaurant Week, and last night, three Phillyists headed over to Astral Plane for dinner. None of us had been there before, despite innumerable recommendations from assorted friends, but we fell in love with the place the moment we sat down. The food would have had to be terrible for us to change our minds. (Fortunately, it wasn't. More of that after the following digression...)

Restaurant Week started last night. That's really awesome for you and me, the average diners who maybe can't afford to eat at many of these restaurants. It's less awesome for the servers who are really going to be getting stiffed on tips.

Twice a year, something amazing happens to make Phillyist happy—and maybe a few pounds heavier. That something is the Center City District's Restaurant Week, and it's coming up January 28-February 2. Thirty dollars (before drinks, tax, and gratuity) gets you three courses at any of 106 top Center City and Old City restaurants.

I went to Crescent City for Restaurant Week and I'm only just now getting to write about it because of (a) Fringe and (b) life, but since everything on their Restaurant Week menu is also on their normal menu, no harm no foul. The Restaurant Week experience, of course, is a little different (a 9 p.m. dinner reservation means you don't really order, you just accept what's left), and that's where my biggest problem with Crescent City was. Obviously I don't keep kosher: I'd ordered the pork chop for dinner. As an appetizer, I'd ordered the shrimp and crab spring rolls. This was all treyf. But one of my companions, who isn't much for pork, had also ordered the spring rolls, and when they came, they didn't exactly look like shrimp and crab. Didn't taste like it, either. I called our waiter over. "Did we get the right thing?"

A quick reminder to all you wallet-conscious gastronomes - yesterday marked the beginning of Philly's annual Restaurant Week, when 99 high-falutin' Philly restaurants offer three-course dinners for $30 per person (not including tax, tips and drinks).  Restaurant Week ends this Friday, so make your reservations while the getting is good.
