Hey, you know those Red Bull commercials where they show the people racing down a hill in crazy DIY carts and it looks like a ton of fun? Well that's happening in Manayunk this Saturday! It's called the Red Bull Soapbox Race. 40 teams of up to four members each craft zany human-powered driving machines and then race to the finish. The hill they'll be racing down in this case is the infamous Wall. But teams are not judged on speed alone: creativity and showmanship are also taken into consideration. Admission is free, and the race will happen rain or shine, so bring an umbrella, or plan to get wet. Pits open at 11AM with the first race starting at 1pm.
It's Book Quarterly time! They got fiction, non, and some excerpts.
You know what we're thinking about today? We're only 21 days away from The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull...Beware the link, the signature music plays right away, and loudly, too.
Happy first weekend of September - and happy Labor Day weekend, too, for our American cities! Let's take a look at what's been happening around the Ist-a-verse.

Nonprofit organization Campus Philly, in association with the city, IKEA, and plenty of other companies and organizations, is holding a huge free concert and festival Saturday afternoon to welcome and celebrate new and returning college students. It's called Campus Philly Kick-Off, and it will lead to un-fun things like road closings (the 2000 block of Winter Street will be closed during setup, and both directions of the inner drives of the Parkway, from 20th Street to the Eakins Oval, will be closed throughout), but it will also include fun things like a TNT Red Bull Freestyle Motocross event; a concert featuring folks like Fat Joe and Saves the Day, as well as local acts like The Capitol Years; an Involvement Fair where you can pick out a good nonprofit, community-based organization to join; free admission to plenty of museums for college students; a live skate jam; and an after party at Shampoo. There will also be a booth set up on the Parkway where you can register to vote, and a free bus loop out to IKEA, so you can do your civic duty and pick up an extra lamp.
Phillyist is, of course, just as patriotic as all of our other Ist brethren out there. And while we might not go crazy flouting it the way we suspect our friends at Londonist will over the next few weeks, we'll still be rooting hard for the good ol' U-S-of-A. Specifically, we'll be rooting for two players on the U.S. roster who hail from Philadelphia: Bobby Convey and Chris Albright.
Going to be in Texas anytime soon? If not, you might want to consider the trip anyway. Not only does Austin's awesome music/film fest SXSW (3/10-3/19) feature a ton of Philly bands (phillyshows has the complete list), our sister site, Austinist, and our father and mother site, Gothamist, are throwing what sounds like a really incredible party down there next Wednesday from midnight to 6AM in a big warehouse called the Red Bull House. There will be DJs, live bands, a troop of naughty Girl Scouts (they have those??), fire dancers, a complimentary open bar (stocked with plenty of Red Bull, of course, as well as the harder stuff), and even gift bags! As if all that weren't enough, Austinist is also hinting at an even more exciting secret. We think we know what that secret is, and although we can't tell you, we can say it's pretty damn exciting.
