Warm Up Your Ping-Pong Balls!

Red cups, ping-pong balls, an 8-foot long table and a couple of pitchers of your favorite throwaway beer made for a great night of drinking in college. Sooner or later (hopefully sooner) you graduated, maybe took that beer pong table with you and set up your new life as a functioning adult. Before too long, you probably glanced at that lonely-looking table in the corner of your living room or basement and thought that maybe, you had outgrown that favorite of collegiate activities. Eventually that table soaked in Coors Light, ramen noodles, fond memories (and maybe a little vomit) made its way to the garbage, never to be heard from again. Enter longtime friends Jerry Piscatelli, Sal Laudano and their brainchild, the Port-O-Pong.

Phillyist Playlist: Bob Mould at North Star

Bob Mould has never shied away from raw emotion in his songs. From his Hüsker Dü days, through his group Sugar and his solo work, he's tackled tough topics like suicide, love gone wrong, and one very bad car crash.

I'm here to tell you about The 1-4-5 Show, a comedy performance you should plan on attending tonight. And I'm going to admit right off the bat that I know two of the performers. Neil McGarry is a former Phillyist and a personal friend, and Mike Eiswerth is a former coworker. But that just means I'm uniquely qualified to tell you just how funny they are, because I've been around them and their comedy stylings for quite awhile. So how funny are they? So funny that even though I used to get the goods for free, I'm more than ready to pony up the cover charge for tonight's show.

Curators on Tour

The first of this year's "Evening with the Curators" events will take place tonight at the Art Alliance in Center City. The curators will be out again at Patou in Old City next Thursday. The Philadelphia Cinema Alliance is calling this "Curators on Tour," which we think is a bit of a misnomer; two locations separated from each other by a brisk walk isn't much of a tour. Also, attending this event at all seems a bit pointless this year. In previous years, the Evening with the Curators was your chance to see the festival program before anybody else. This year, the program is already out, tickets are already on sale, and many of us have already decided on our schedules for the festival. Checking in with the curators still might be worth it, though, as you'll get an insider's view of what it was like to program the festival, and learn which movies the programmers themselves enjoyed the most. You might even end up adding one or two films to your schedule that you hadn't even considered seeing before. Plus, they'll be giving away free Smart Water and Vitamin Water at tonight's event. Freebies are always good.

Parking

Did any one attend the Love Park kissykissy commercial shoot this past sunday? I didn't—choosing instead to do research on this week's park: Dickinson Square. Although Dickinson is in its name, the park is actually located a block south of Dickinson Street, between Tasker and Morris, and bordered by 4th Street and Moyamensing Avenue on the West and East sides. The park has been a park since 1900, after the Pascal Iron Works packed up and moved to Delaware, deeding the land to the city, who then gave it to the Children's Culture League (hence its rather awesome playground). The name comes from John Dickinson, governor of Pennsylvania from 1782-1785 (who also happened to found Dickinson College, serve as governor as Delaware, and advocate for NOT separating from Britain. The man got around: he deserves his park).

Amy Freeman joins our staff today with a weekly column on Philadelphia's many parks. A native of the Philadelphia area, Amy thinks soft pretzels take the cake in the battle of Philadelphia delicacies and travels the city with the strength of her own two legs—by foot or by bike. Welcome, Amy!

Every Tuesday and Thursday, we'll be posting events that are going on sale during the current week. This Tuesday post only collects the early announcements, so definitely check back on Thursday for the latest ticket news.

The last time we wrote about The Sea and Cake coming through town was June of last year. Since then, the band that's named after a misinterpretation of a title of a song by a band that's even more obscure have put together a new album called Car Alarm. We were slightly disturbed to find the album has more than Sea and Cake's traditional ten tracks, but thankfully nothing else about it is much of a departure from their previous work. It's still good old, reliable, mellow, catchy indie rock. Our favorite tracks are "Aerial," "On a Letter," and "Weekend." You can get a free download of "Aerial," as well as a number of other great Sea and Cake tracks, if you head over to the R5 Productions website and scroll down to the section about the show. Oh yeah, there's a show! Sea and Cake will be playing the First Unitarian Church with Death Vessel this Friday night. Check it out.
