What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

It'll probably be pouring tonight, but so what? The temperatures are on the rise, Daylight Savings Time starts again on Sunday, and it's time to get this Spring started! Where better than at First Friday? Here are our top three picks.

Holy crap, people! It's 2008!

When Richard Kelly's film Southland Tales was originally screened at Cannes, the buzz was extraordinarily negative. The word was that the movie was a great big mess - ridiculous and nonsensical. I didn't want to believe it. I really enjoyed Kelly's amazing indie/romance/sci-fi flick Donnie Darko. I thought maybe people were reacting to Southland Tales the way that some had reacted to The Fountain: they were confused by it because they hadn't looked hard enough...

Free Yr Radio, a campaign launched by Toyota and Urban Outfitters in support of independent radio, is getting a soundtrack. It's a benefit compilation CD that's coming out tomorrow (a release date chosen to coincide with non-commercial radio's biggest event, the CMJ conference in Manhattan - an event we've gotten more press releases about than we can count). The compilation features a collection of live music, B-side tracks and previously unreleased material from the campaign's participating bands, and it's available exclusively at Urban Outfitters stores nationwide, and from the retailer's catalog and web site at www.urbanoutfitters.com. All profits from the CD will be divided among the campaign's participating radio stations (one of which is our very own Y-Rock on XPN in Philadelphia).

Holy crap, it's June! June 1, to be exact. And how convenient that the first day of June happens to also be the first Friday in June. If you can brave tonight's expected showers, here are three spots we recommend:

It's the first First Friday of the spring, and the weather today promises to be perfect for walking around Old City. Which means today's probably going to be crowded, so if you want free wine and all the cheese and crackers you can eat, you should plan on hitting the galleries earlier in the evening. That's what we'll be doing, at the places below and other locations. (Free is the best kind of drunk to be...)

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you.

Spring is when we get busy here in the Ist-A-Verse. Very busy. But, after staying bundled-up indoors all winter, it's nice for us to be out, about, and collecting things to write about for you. Here's a glimpse at what's been keeping your favorite citybloggers busily away from home and out of bed.

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

Dear Shoe Makers:

Last Friday, January 5, the GPTMC held a joint press conference with Mayor Street at F.U.E.L. Collection (the former Real World House) in Old City. During the conference, the Mayor reaffirmed the goal that the city of Philadelphia would be wireless by 2007—something that may have been cast slightly into doubt by the fact that the GPTMC was handing out Wi-Fi detectors to members of the press. (They presented it as an ironic gift: soon, they'll be lit up all the time...)

It's First Friday—also known to us as the most wonderful time of the month. Public drunkenness is never more fun—or acceptable—in Old City. (Even on Saturday nights. Seriously.)

As 2006 ends and 2007 begins, the -ists look back not at the past week, but at the past year. So here it is, your Best of 2006 Spectacular. And from all of us at the -ists, happy New Year!

Phillyist paid tribute to her this week with a heartfelt letter to her and an obituary.

The best of the internet, chopped into tiny bits and grilled for your enjoyment.

Dear Everyone (yet again):

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you.

Tonight at North3rd (3rd and Brown Streets in Northern Liberties), Skeletor - professional thorn in He-Man's side turned stagebound crooner - will be perfoming for your free listening pleasure. (Phillyist is a sucker any event where cartoon characters step out into the real world. Blame it on repeated viewings of ). Afterwards, stay for films from local and independent auteurs at the weekly local film showcase, Fancy Pants Cinema. The shennanigans begin at 9PM.

Where is probably the only place in Philly that you can find a poor college student, a doctor, a biker, a businessman, a sorority girl, and a bleached socialite mingling with one another? Drinker's Tavern. Long before termed Mel’s “serenity hang-out” (a reference to MTV’s Real World: Philadelphia), this dark hole-in-the-wall bar has been getting Philly patrons drunk for nearly three years. Ridiculously drunk. For ridiculously cheap. Seriously, in a city where martinis are skyrocketing towards the ten dollar mark and burgers for fifteen, this place is a gem for shallow pockets. Where else can you throw back $2 Jaegermeister shots and a 40 ounce bottle ALL THE TIME? 30 bucks buys the whole bar a shot. Not only was its jukebox, which spits out a myriad of tunes from Radiohead to Metallica, voted best jukebox in Philadelphia by City Paper, the bar also gains bragging rights for having the best happy hour in the city. From 7:30 to 9:30, $5 pitchers flow continuously, even on a Saturday night.

According to Heery Casting: “The Block is an ensemble drama about five teenagers growing up in the same suburban neighborhood. Friends, strangers, lovers, rivals – their lives intersect and collide as they embark on a journey to find their individual voice, their unique identity. It's a show about our intimate moments and personal spaces. The place you always outgrow, but will always say you're from. Your block." No word yet on which block the filming will take place, but it shouldn't disrupt anything. Since the Real World, we here in Philly are used to circumventing melodramatic beautiful people and their camera crews on the street. Photo credit: Amazon

Enjoy PBS's Colonial Life, but wish it wasn't so...educational? Have a hard time watching people try to live in another era, when those people aren't models, and that era was oh-so-long ago? MTV may have the solution for you: The 70s House premiered tonight at 10:30. But wait, you might be saying, why did MTV pick this random decade, anyway? Two answers immediately come to mind: (1) To make use of the super-tight clothing, and (2) To make the rest of us feel old. Even if you never lived a day in the seventies, you will feel as mature as a Golden Girl when you watch these Real World wannabes try to figure out how to work a rotary phone. In fact, the most entertaining aspect of this show was watching the cast members freak out about being on this show instead of a hipper, less frightfully embarrassing one. No need to tune into this one next week -— or its inevitable successors in the seasons to come. Photo credit: Newsday

rocky.jpgAccording to the producers of the Real World, Philly is about the 12th hippest U.S. city (13th, if you count New York twice). You’d never know it from the national press we receive, but Philly is actually the 5th largest U.S. city in terms of population. Today’s Inquirer reports that although projections had indicated we’d be surpassed by Phoenix this year, we are still holding onto the five spot with a slight lead: 1,470,151 to 1,418,041. Of course, we’re still number one in a lot of other categories. . .like cheese steaks, Mummers, and Rocky paraphernalia. Phoenix has nothing on us! And we might be smaller than New York, L.A., Chicago, and Houston, but we still beat Houston to a Real World.
