Asshole of the Week

What a week for the morally bankrupt—get out your human hamster balls—the jerkface warning this week is in red alert. We're less shining city on a hill and more festering, partially drained swamp sinkholed between two slime-pollutant-intoxicated rivers.

We've already mentioned this story. And we likely will again. But seriously, look at this poor cat. Who does something like that? And don't most serial killers start with animals? Shudder.

Yo, Philly in the News

  • It looks like the city's decision to take the animal control contract away from PACCA and turn it over to the PSPCA is on the verge of becoming an unmitigated disaster.

  • The case of the Coatesville arsons may have been solved, at least partially. Police arrested a 19-year-old tech student from Downington who is suspected of setting at least nine of the twenty-four fires that made headlines and put so many people out of homes. Police also arrested a 20-year-old in connection with the attempted arson of the Happy Days Family Bistro in Thorndale, not far from Coatesville.

  • The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals voted last month to allow cruelty investigators to carry guns. The vote comes after various officers have been involved in spats with armed animal abusers. Before the agents can carry a weapon, though, they must first undergo training and certification.
  • PAWS Dog of the Week

points out in an article today, what really matters is the animals.

In case you didn't know, our good friends at PAWS represent the adoption branch of the Philadelphia Animal Care & Control Association, which has been the city's contractor for animal services for the last several years. Here's an example of how it worked (in an admittedly oversimplified way): When a person saw a stray animal, he or she would call the city (or PACCA directly), for PACCA to catch the animal. When the PACCA workers caught the animal, if it was adoptable, they would turn it over to PAWS so that it could be adopted out.
