In Holidayland, where the weeks are short and the thunderstorms the weathermen have been insisting on for almost two weeks continue to evade radar. Evadar? Oh, nevermind. Given the crime rate in Philadelphia, it's not surprising that there are plenty of children in our fair city with a parent (or two) behind bars. Since children often model their behavior after what they see their elders doing, we could be in for a heap of trouble. According to New York Amsterdam News, children of incarcerated parents are six to 10 times more likely to end up in prison than the average young person.

  • A plan made public yesterday reveals the city prisons commissioner's strategies to reduce prison overcrowding, fight recidivism, and improve prison-staff morale. Meanwhile, an as yet unreleased study of the Philadelphia prison system reveals that recidivism has less to do with prison overcrowding than first-time offenders.
  • "Women in prison" was, once upon a time, quite the popular film genre. Not usually such a popular play genre, though that didn't stop Marsha Norman from writing , a play about a recently-released female inmate currently being produced by Simpatico Theatre Project, although it probably should have.
