We first heard of Architecture in Helsinki a few years ago when they were touring with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. As in, wtf is an Architecture in Helsinki. Then we got to Troc early enough that night to find out exactly what it was: a six piece collective from Australia with a frenetic energy that made them completely irresistible. They never stopped moving. Each time they finished a song, everyone switched instruments and they started all over again. It was crazy. Their songs were so catchy we hopped up as soon as their set was over and bought both of their albums.

Girls Rock Philly, the organization, is gearing up for Girls Rock Philly, a week-long alternative music camp for girls aged 10-18. This is the first time Philadelphia will host such a camp (we're slightly behind Chicago, New York, Portland, and Murfreesboro, TN), and they need your help to make this debut really, well, rocking.
Please welcome to the ranks of the Phillyist staff Mr. Chris Zakorchemny, who'll be helping us fill in the gaps in our sports coverage this summer. Chris found us (and we found him) through Flickr. Yay, sports! Yay, Flickr!
The Megaloping guys might be SEPTA’s biggest champions these days. They’re firm believers in the power of public transportation, and they’re on a mission—to make it from northern Virgina to Portland, Maine using only subways, city busses, and commuter railways their entire trip. They’re passing through Philly tonight.

Girls Rock Philly is part of a foundation that works to run summer camps for local girls, ages ten through eighteen, in which they get the opportunity to "make their own band." In the process, they do musical training, while also honing their song writing skills and learning how to design band merchandise. Girls Rock Camp began in Portland, Oregon, in 2000, and this year will be its first summer in Philly.
A very cool event for a very cool cause is going down tomorrow night, and we wanted you to know about it. The event is a winter-themed dance party called Shake & Shiver, featuring music, film screenings, a raffle, refreshments, and a holiday photo booth. It's the first fundraiser for a non-profit organization called Girls Rock Philly, who are working to establish Philly's only rock camp for girls:
A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.
If it weren't for our life as an -ist, we're not sure we'd ever leave our apartment. Fortunately, to fully -ist, one must seek out the new, the fresh, and the unknown. Brand new, or just new to us, that's what we're all about this week.
Sometimes you need to clean yourself up, get serious, and move in with daddie for a few months before you head to Latin America for a new gig. The District bid's Jenna Bush adios. D.C.-based television shows have an elderly audience and DCist has Butterstick the panda bear a birthday bash.
The Ten Commandments (Mon and Tue; 9PM-11PM; ABC) - Passover and Easter are on their way, and you know what that means: time to watch The Ten Commandments on TV! But wait a minute - this isn't the old Charlton Heston Ten Commandments; this is a new two-part TV mini-series starring Dougray Scott as Moses, Naveen Andrews (from "Lost"), Claire Bloom, and Omar Sharif. Miniseries produced for ABC have turned out to be surprisingly good in the past, so you never know, this could be a new masterpiece. Anyway, it's gotta be better than watching Edward G. Robinson pretend to be an Egyptian for the thousandth time. (Official site)
Phillyist is not one to discriminate. We understand that there are actually interesting things that go on in the suburbs. Or at least we’re told. Saturday night July 16th, Portland, Oregon’s Lion Fever will test this theory out for us in West Chester.
