In the last few weeks, the Eagles have looked absolutely anemic against the Giants, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against da' Bears, and unimpressively beaten a couple hopeless teams in the Jets and the Vikings by a mere touchdown apiece. So forgive me for not being that optimistic about Sunday night's game against the Cowboys. Sure, our defense has been fairly solid... if we forget that last 1:57 of the Bears game, where we managed to make Brian Griese look like Jon Elway. But the Cowboys are the best offense not wearing New England Patriots uniforms that we'll see this year. I've resigned myself to getting beaten, probably badly, by our arch-rivals. So much so, in fact, that I won't be watching Sunday night's game. Instead, I'll be spending Sunday night with another rival: Paper Rival.

We first heard of Architecture in Helsinki a few years ago when they were touring with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. As in, wtf is an Architecture in Helsinki. Then we got to Troc early enough that night to find out exactly what it was: a six piece collective from Australia with a frenetic energy that made them completely irresistible. They never stopped moving. Each time they finished a song, everyone switched instruments and they started all over again. It was crazy. Their songs were so catchy we hopped up as soon as their set was over and bought both of their albums.
On of our favorite shows this summer was the MAE/Ok Go/The Fray concert at the Tweeter Center. Imagine 25,000 screaming fans, perfect weather and awesome seats. It was incredible. Though we are a huge fan of intimate settings and up-and-coming bands, we enjoyed the huge crowd, music and overall feel of the outdoor concert. It really was the perfect way to start the summer. Now, we are fortunate to end our summer with an intimate,...

Crazy indie rock band Sebadoh is back in their classic line-up (Eric Gaffney, Jason Loewenstein, and Dinosaur Jr. bassist Lou Barlow), they're touring the US for the first time in 14 years, and they're coming to Philly! Specifically, they'll be at the Northstar TONIGHT with The Bent Moustache. Sebadoh's trio will be pulling their old trick of switching instruments frequently, and their set list will include tracks "from all eras of Sebadoh's existence," so expect fun and variation. To get you pumped, here's a few MP3s. Download away!
Ready for soothing tunes to warm you up? Singer/songwriter Alexi Murdoch is playing tonight at The North Star Bar.
North Star Bar: where the rock stars intermingle with the crowd (probably due to the fact that the back stage area is the sidewalk of Poplar St.). Last night’s line-up featured the usual up-and-coming indie acts: Little Man Tate, Starcade, The Changes, and Monsters are Waiting (recently featured in this NYT article on what it really means for an indie band to play in big-exposure festivals). For a rainy Tuesday evening with news channels in full election night force, the crowd was understandably sparse - a few bar goers and friends of the band.
DeVotchKa are coming to the North Star Bar with Norfolk & Western tonight, but don't expect a lot of fun and dancing. N&W do a kind of slow, sad, pretty, country-style indie - or at least, that's what's all over their latest album, A Gilded Age - which just might leave you crying in your beer. Or at the very least looking over it in a very pensive manner. Meanwhile, a review of DeVotchKa's latest album posted on their site describes it as "the album you put on when you want to wallow, when you want to brood, when you want to...lose yourself in the wistful tragedy of love and loss and hope and nostalgia." Which is how we might have described A Gilded Age, if we were a better writer. So there you go - if you want to be depressed, head on down to the North Star tonight! Woo hoo!
The Penn and Drexel Cycling Clubs are co-hosting The Arkema Group Schuylkill Challenge Bicycle Race in Fairmount Park this weekend. (Note that the title of that last page we linked to predicts the winner as Penn - we wonder if the folks at Drexel, not to mention the other schools, have noticed that yet.) It's actually a series of bike races and time trials taking place in various places and at various times on Saturday and Sunday; for more details, check out the link above, or download the PDF of the flyer here (beware - almost 3MB). You can register here.
