Yo, Philly in the News

Heidy ho, Philly! There's a "Chill Gripping Plains and Rockies" and the Phils are up a game in the NLDS. On our side of the Mississippi, it's looking like sunny skies and 70 degrees. And now, Headlines!

Asshole of the Week

This week's award-winning terrible people hatched up a plan in Uniontown for babymaking far worse than what anyone could complain about Octomom. The couple, Shana Brown and Duane Calloway, were unable to have children on their own. Instead of considering one of the normal and upstanding options—adoption, fostering—they thought they could use Shana's thirteen year old daughter (apparently from back in the days when Brown could have children) as a baby incubator. First, they asked for her permission, saying she could marry Duane once she became pregnant (what a fabulous reward!), but after she turned them down, they decided to move forward with the plan anyway.

What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

  • Patrol officers around the city will soon be riding around on Segways as part of a 10-day trial of the personal scooters. Segways come with high recommendations from other departments, but officers here still need to be convinced that they're practical. Training begins this morning.
  • Obama came to Philadelphia to talk to the state AFL-CIO convention yesterday, a day after Clinton had done the same. No word on whether he compared himself to Rocky—or Apollo Creed, for that matter. Meanwhile, Clinton was talking economics in Pittsburgh.
  • A federal appeals court decision yesterday threw out Mumia Abu-Jamal's death sentence for killing Daniel Faulkner and ruled that Abu-Jamal must be sentenced to life in prison or get a chance with a new Philadelphia jury that would decide only whether he should get life or be sentenced to death again.
  • The Inquirer takes a look at the battle going on over a proposed state-wide ban on smoking in Pennsylvania.
  • Last Friday & the weekend: Michael probably doesn't know it, but he got a shout-out from Hot Hot Heat frontman Michael Bays at last week's FREEZEtival before the band played "Bandages." What the connection between the song and our mayor is, we have no idea. And in real news, Michael named his appointees to the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority board.

The Sixers lost on the road to the Celtics on Friday, but finally beat the Toronto Raptors, the first time this season, 99-95 Saturday. They’re playing the Pacers today at 2PM (watch or get tickets) and the Pistons on Wednesday night at 7PM (watch or get tickets) at the Wachovia Center.

Many, many moons ago, this Phillyist spent her college years carousing through the mean streets of Pittsburgh. As anyone knows, a good carousing needs a soundtrack, and in Pittsburgh, the soundtrack was invariably the music of The Clarks.

  • Three attacks on young girls have been reported in Camden since October, and police suspect they may be connected. They're on the look-out for a predator, and are warning parents to pay close attention to their children.
  • We recently posted about the promising state of the Philadelphia Flyers this season, but we never thought they would be this good.

  • The search for John Lewis, the suspect in the murder of Officer Chuck Cassidy, is over. Police apprehended him at a homeless shelter in Miami at 7AM. They tracked him down after learning that a relative had bought a bus ticket to Miami for him.
  • A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you.

WHYY-TV first got on air as the second educational television station in Pennsylvania (WQED in Pittsburgh was the first two years before) in September of 1957, broadcasting locally produced educational programs from the old WCAU studios. However, they weren’t on channel 12. The station started off on channel 35, which meant they didn’t have a lot of viewers, since they were a UHF station and most televisions of the era had no UHF tuners. WHYY-FM had already gotten on air three years before.

Still riding the good vibes of their 2006 releases, Girl Talk and Dan Deacon come to town this evening for an R5 show at Club Polaris (AKA the Starlight Ballroom).

The elephants won't be here much longer, but we definitely plan on visiting them some time before they go to Pittsburgh!

If you didn't know anything about the band Trans Am (which, just for yucks, let's assume we didn't), and were basing your preconceptions of them entirely on their name, you might think they're a straight-ahead classic rock outfit with lots of guitars and songs about engines. But in fact their latest disc, Sex Change (released in February on the Thrill Jockey label), is filled with instrumental, synth-heavy, poppy post rock, and is overall pure bouncy fun. We like!

  • Philly's three African elephants now have new travel plans: Pittsburgh. Here's hoping that this deal doesn't fall through like the last one did. And that they don't become Steelers fans.
  • Yo, dude, Kumar's gonna be teaching at Penn! Seriously, Kal Penn (no relation) is going to be a guest instructor for the Asian American Studies Program in the spring 2008 semester. Appropriately enough, the classes he's teaching are called "Images of Asian Americans in the Media" and "Contemporary American Teen Films."
  • ...Main Points Missed: That's us, missing the main point. This story is adorable, but hello? When did Pennsylvania become part of the Midwest? (Via .)

This past weekend, I went to Charlottesville, VA with my parents and paternal grandfather for my cousin, "Leah’s" wedding. I don’t know most of my dad’s side of the family all that well. Leah grew up in Pittsburgh, which is easily a six-hour drive from Lambertville. Needless to say, we didn’t spend too much time together growing up. We’ve always gotten along, I just wouldn’t necessarily say I her. And I’d only met her fiancé twice. The first time was at a family dinner, where he said: "Rick Santorum is not conservative enough for me." I am a fierce bleeding-heart liberal. At that exact point in time, I was a fierce bleeding heart alcoholic, and immediately chugged three glasses of wine to stop myself from choking.

  • In more disturbing news, a police officer with the School District of Philadelphia has been suspended and is now facing charges after being identified as the suspect responsible for attempting to kidnap a 15-year-old girl in West Philly on Sunday.
  • Speaking of local political races, the Inquirer has a fun run-down of the various campaigns. We particularly like the first bit, about Rendell losing weight to stay in shape, and his story about the Pittsburgh cabbie who, when asked about Lynn Swann, said, "Too pretty; I'm voting for the ugly guy." "Hey," Rendell said, "whatever works."
