Twitterist: Philadelphia In 140 Characters Or Less

Today's featured Twitter user is @Drew. Known in meatspace as Drew Olanoff, he is a Philly blogger engaged in his own fight against cancer. He was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in May 2009. In an effort to put the disease in its place, he started the #blamedrewscancer hashtag on Twitter, which has since gone viral and turned into a powerful movement.

Leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez met President Barack Obama recently at the Summit of the Americas. Chavez gave Obama a book about colonialism in Latin America and an island. Petty Island (Google Map) is home to a fuel-storage center used by Venezuela-owned CITGO. Well, Chavez gave it back, and it's going to be a nature preserve, specifically preserving two bald eagles. That's not the only good thing about the return of the island to U.S. ownership, though. The island is a part of Pennsauken Township, NJ, and, according to their web site, the pirate Blackbeard parked his pirate ship there whenever he wanted to hang out in Philadelphia. Consequently, we think a few acres for a piracy museum isn't too much to ask.

It be International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and there be many ways to celebrate. The Franklin Real Pirates exhibit is a natural choice, though on the pricier side; as an added bonus, however, "Cap'n Slappy" and "Ol' Chumbucket," founders of the holiday in question, will be on hand, and there will be a screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl at 8PM.

We admit that we shut off last night's Phillies game in disgust. (This seems to be turning into a pattern with us, although this should surprise no one, given the Phightin's 3-9 start - a start that makes "lackluster" look like "on fire." Seriously, they're off to their worst start since 1997, a season so bad that we gave up and started paying attention to the Pirates.)
