Neal Dandade is one of my heroes. Luckily for me, unlike most people's heroes, I know mine. Quite well, actually: Neal and I go back ten years and two thousand miles to Coronado High School in El Paso, Texas. We acted together then, and now I'm lucky to get onstage once a year, but Neal is doing it professionally, performing with a number of improvisational and sketch comedy groups in the Chicago area—including the career-launching Second City. As you'll see from his interview below, improv is a natural fit for Neal, who sometimes thinks so fast it's hard to keep up. ("He was always so bright," as Mamaist put it.) You may actually have seen some of his work: know those Boost Mobile commercials with the rapping George Washington? Neal actually originated the jingle (but hasn't, as of yet, been given any credit for his work).

, Pig Iron Theatre Company's fundraiser, only happens once per year, so we're not going to trouble you with a full review that might make your mouth water and your jealousy rise. If you weren't there, try to make it next year. That's all.

Last year's For the Love of Pig Iron benefit show, "PIG FEAT!" was one of the best performances we saw all year. This one-night-only variety show featured drag acts, dancing, music, and the most spirited, competitive, live auction we've ever seen. We knew we'd be back in 2008.

Werner Herzog's increasing popularity in this day and age is a little bit of a mystery to us. How can so many jaded urbanites—folks whose every word comes with air-quotes—venerate a passionate, nature-obsessed German madman who claims that "I simply do not understand irony, a defect I have had ever since I was able to think independently." This year's mini-hit Rescue Dawn, for instance, was arguably the least cynical Vietnam movie since the John Wayne-starring The Green Berets, even if Herzog's hero, Dieter Dengler, played by Christian Bale, is obviously completely insane. As with Timothy Treadwell, the protagonist of Herzog's incredible documentary Grizzly Man, it's impossible to tell whether the film's a critique of Dengler's peculiarly American brand of grinning, maniacal persistence or an homage to it.
