  • There were two car crashes last night involving police vehicles. A teenage girl accompanied by a 5-year-old stole a patrol car at around 5:40PM while the officer was interviewing a complainant on the 1200 block of Gilham Street. She dropped the child off with a relative before crashing the car around 20 minutes later, and then sat tight to wait for the police. She'll be charged with car theft. Meanwhile, at around 8PM a police wagon and another automobile collided at 50th and Westminster Ave., injuring four people, including two police officers. It's not clear yet who was at fault.
  • Some news on area bridges: first, be aware that the South Street Bridge is going to be closed overnight tonight, from 9PM to 5AM, for routine maintenance (read: they're going to try to keep it from crumbling into the river for a little bit longer). Second, the Inquirer has an article with some more details about next year's $100 million-plus reconstruction project on the Walt Whitman Bridge.
  • The PA budget got held up a bit yesterday by some further discussion, especially about the Senate plan to fund hazardous-sites cleanup by taking $40 million from a land preservation fund. Lawmakers have made the wise decision to not decide on the most contentious bits until later, so the budget did indeed get through both Houses yesterday and will be signed by Rendell later today... hopefully, anyway.
  • U. Penn's Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital may have been the first to give a snake high-energy radiation therapy yesterday when they treated a 61/2-foot anaconda's tumor. The snake, btw, is Sir Mix-A-Lot from Wilmington's Brandywine Zoo.
  • There must be something in the Cheez Whiz, since Rick Oliveri, the owner of Rick’s Philly Steaks in Reading Terminal Market, is again in some hot water. The last time that Rick, a member of the original Pat’s Steak’s family, was in the news, was last October, when he was getting sued by relative Frank Oliveri Jr. over references to Pat’s Steaks in the promotional materials for his Citizens Bank Park location.
