Good Morning, Rippers.

How do you like your pin-ups? Beautifully deranged? Covered in blood? Deadly hot and just in time for Halloween? Damned if Charlie's Rippers aren't all of the above.

Frugal Fun Alert: Weekend

Why You Should Love The Philly Roller Girls

Roller derby. Let's think about what these two words conjure up in most people's minds. Chicks, fishnet stockings, punk rock, chicks beating each other up, roller skates (or is it Rollerblades?), chicks fighting, don't they have fake names? In fact, isn't it ALL fake?

No, it's not a new reality TV show. But the Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention is going on all weekend, and it might just be more entertaining than watching Miami Ink or L.A. Ink.

Women's roller derby rolls back into town with the Philly Roller Girls' season opener this Saturday. The Heavy Metal Hookers will kick off the evening's bloodshed as they attempt to show the Carolina Roller Girls' Debutante Brawlers how we do things up north. In the second matchup of the night, two-time Warrior Cup champions the Philthy Britches will face off against the Broad Street Butchers.

Maybe Whiskey Dix has lost its charm (and maybe its license...again); maybe you just feel it’s time to get out during daylight hours. Maybe mom used to shield your eyes on the street and now you’re curious about the "freak shows" she wanted you to avoid. In any case, check out the Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention. The three-day affair isn’t just for inked up bouncers and other assorted burly dudes, either. Attendance often includes families and people just in it for the spectacle. You know, people watchers like yours truly.

You've heard us mention the Philly Roller Girls before, once or twice. Well, they're having their 2006 championship game this Sunday at their regular spot: Millenium Skate World, across the bridge in Camden. Both teams - the Broad Street Butchers and the Philthy Britches - are undefeated, so it should be a good match. Get there early to see performances by Rich Hillen Jr. of The World Famous Crawlspace Brothers (who we're not sure are really all that famous, as we've never heard of them, but still) and Hola Diablo. Also consider helping the girls and the People's Emergency Center by bringing some of the supplies listed here, which are being collected for homeless families. Each item you bring with you gets you a raffle ticket which could win you prizes between periods.

C'mon, admit it: you haven't washed that filthy old car of yours since Clinton was in office. So why not take it up to the parking lot next to Walt's Circle Tavern - right off Oxford Circle on Route 1 in Northeast Philly - between noon and 5PM tomorrow and get it washed by the Philly Roller Girls? (Check out our fun interview with them here.) They'll do it for you (on their skates, we hope) for only $8 (with a half-price discount for police and fire vehicles), and the money will go to fund their new travel team, who are headed to Las Vegas in November to face the Sin City Roller Girls. While you're there, you can pick up tickets to the league's first ever championship bout, which takes place September 10th, and features competition between two undefeated teams: the Broad Street Butchers and the Philthy Britches.

Philly Roller Girls

Word association time: what do the words "roller skating" make you think of? To me, "roller skating" is equivalent to "summer, " "glide," "wood floors," & "couple's skate." Take a look at the Philly Roller Girls press release', however, and you'll see words like "brutal," "bout," and "battle." And I used to think the worst one could suffer from skating was a twisted ankle or a skinned knee.
