Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar.
You're all probably familiar with Miss Bee by now. She's a frequent commenter on Phillyist who heard our call for new writers and was quick to answer it, so we couldn't help but upgrade her posting privileges. Born in Philadelphia, Miss Bee has lived here most of her life, with a few quick hiatuses that we forgive her for. She likes Butterscotch Krimpets, is baffled by SEPTA behavior, and will be trying out for the Eagles Cheerleading squad for the sole purpose of "moral support" for a friend. Welcome, Jen!
We'd like to thank Chris Illuminati at phillyBurbs.com for calling us one of Philadelphia's ten best websites, where we're joined by such local luminaries as Philadelphia Will Do, Foobooz, Geekadelphia, and Overheard in Philly. Chris has promised us a month's supply of home-churned butter as a prize. We need it soon, Chris: we just invited Paula Deen for dinner!
Dan McQuade of Philadelphia Will Do (maybe you've seen us mention him) has been assigned the enviable task of getting paid (by Vanity Fair!) to watch television for the next two weeks—specifically, the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, which kick off tonight on various NBC networks. You can check out his blog, chronicling as much of the 3,600 hours of coverage as he can stand, right here.
This week, we bring you the buzz from ONE 215 blog... namely, Philadelphia Will Do.
We bring you the buzz in the 215 blogs this week.
Philebrity applauded the installation of solar panels at the Philadelphia Naval Yard while simultaneously making fun of Naval Yard denizen Urban Outfitters. Maybe next we'll get some windmills. We know of a few places to put them where there's plenty of hot air being blown about.
We bring you the buzz from the 215 blogs this week:
Here's what went down in the 215 blogs this week, with some unintentional emphasis on cheesesteaks.
Mr. Philadelphia Will Do himself, Dan McQuade, submitted this gem from Mayor Nutter's itinerary from last Friday. Surely, a mayor with a new plan for public education (PDF) should hire people who know the difference between "its" and "it's"!
D-Mac over at Philadelphia Will Do just emailed us to let us know about this article in today's Inquirer. We think that good "roll" models don't just eat right and exercise – they also copy edit.
Weekend's here, so most bloggers will be taking it light for the next two days. That's because most people blog from work while they're supposed to be getting things done. Yeah you. You know you do it too.
Ugh. Milton Street is more of a fiasco than a real candidate, something of a sideshow in the political circus. He may even sideline Brady's chances! Oh the shame!
Common logic dictates that if, mere months ago you were indicted for tax fraud, your chances of winning a mayoral race are slim. Same for if you don’t live in the city where you are seeking office. Or the same state in which that city is located. Or if your brother is the much-maligned outgoing mayor.
- Philadelphia Will Do breaks the story that isn't a really a story (or is it?): despite an incriminating item in his Wikipedia entry (an item which no longer appears), local ABC affiliate news anchor Jim Gardner (aka James Goldman) was not arrested in New York for solicitation. Philadelphia Will Do's inevitable question: Who's out to get Jim Gardner?
- Akkam's Razor is apparently movie. They've got loads of related links.
-By way of the This Is the City of Brotherly Love LJ Community, (and subsequently The Inquirer and Bizjournal.com) we learn that Philly isn't as smart as we might think we are. We were going to start a discussion about how this was a syllogistic fallacy to equate "degreed" with intelligence, but we just couldn't be arsed, frankly. So, um, yeah. How do you like those apples, smarty pants?
- Phillybits spots an UFO. Luckily, not only did he have his DV cam at the ready, but there was also a band playing nearby to provide a rockin' soundtrack.
- Both philly and Philadelphia Will Do have some strong words for Geno's owner, Joe Vento, in reaction to his "When Ordering, Speak English" policy. Since when has "Whiz wit" been considered English?
The 700Level (by way of Philadelphia Will Do) informs us that this weekend, EverQuest II will allow users try and challenge an online, in game version of "Curt Schilling." Defeat Schilling, and Sony Online will donate $5 to the ALS association.
- By way of Philly Future, we find that phillyskyline.com invited local university students to give their views on their respective campuses (literally).
Eschaton points towards news that Big Brother may have been paying more attention than any of us thought.
- Phillywriters give the heads up about an upcoming silent auction to support Philadelphia Stories magazine.
The Oscars may be over, but while promohthree was satisfied with live-blogging the award show, other Philly bloggers have been busy giving out awards of their own:
