Proofreading Philly

Hey there, Philly Mag. We love long sweaters, too. But you know what we love even more than long sweaters? Remembering the apostrophe in "we're." (We can't tell whether it makes things better or worse that you remembered it in the initial post, but forgot it on the eleven slides following.)

Yo, Philly in the News

  • The three men who are being held in the death of David Sale, Jr., are in court this morning for their preliminary hearing. The hearing is expected to last all day today with potential to spill into tomorrow.

    Yo, Philly Down the Shore

Why is it that during the season where we bare-all in our bikinis, tank tops, and shorts, it is also the time we want to eat greasy boardwalk food like fried oreos and funnel cake? And pizza and fries and jersey corn and tomatoes and strawberries and... ok, i'll stop. It's a tough life, but somebody's gotta do it. Check out the happenings—food and non-food related—down the shore this weekend:

  • Weatherization Assistantance Program funding is heading our way. Get out your caulk!
  • Somehow, we managed to forget that the James Beard awards were last night, and so it's with a lot of hometown pride, as well as a healthy love for tapas, that we wanted to pass on the good word that Jose Garces was awarded Best Chef of the Mid-Atlantic region for his work at Amada in Old City. Between that and the recent Philadelphia Magazine Top 50 restaurant list that saw each of Garces' establishments in the top half of the rankings, we can make this official pronouncement: it's Jose's world. We're just living eating in it.

It's eleven o'clock in the morning and we're already ready to make this.

Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar.

  • We'd like to take a moment to say goodbye to J. Welles Henderson, the founder of the Independence Seaport Museum. Phillyist re-visited the museum recently, and it really is a testament to his vision. We encourage all of you to visit in his honor.
    • For some, yesterday began with a 3 Alarm fire in a 3-story building on West Lehigh. The fire started in the basement apartment of the building, and one of the two tenants of said apartment is currently unaccounted for.
    • Shooting in South Philly. Phillyist has been noticing variations of this sentence: "No arrests have been made and a motive for the shooting is unknown." at the end of news briefs about shootings in the area with increasing frequency of late. We're no fans of violence in general - but we're particular petrified by the proliferation of violence without motive. It means we're all targets, all the time.
    • Philadelphia Hotels are unhappy with the Philadelphia Magazine's cover story about our fair city's problem with violent crime. Apparently, they're afraid it might frighten the tourists. We appreciate the hospitality industry's concern, but surely if a tourist is learning about our safety issues for the first time from a magazine cover in their hotel lobby, it's already much too late for them to cancel and request a refund. So the hotel's bookings should be safe enough from this magazine issue. Those of us who live here year round, however, should probably still worry.

  • Hundreds of Jews rallied in Philly on Monday around lunchtime, most to support Israel in their current actions against Hezbollah, although there was also a small group there to protest the use of violence by both sides of the conflict.
  • -The Good Reverend is envious of Stephen Hawking. Well, of his theoretical dinner engagements, anyway.
