  • The Philadelphia Housing Authority is selling 1800 vacant properties to raise money, mostly in North and Southwest Philadelphia.
  • Charles Tyson will not serve a third term as mayor of South Harrison Township. He is vacating office because he and his family have endured death threats and racist vandalism since he became the town's first black mayor two years ago. At a township reorganization meeting on Monday, the 66-year-old Tyson declined a nomination to continue serving as mayor but agreed to be deputy mayor.
  • Every year when the University of Pennsylvania's students go home for the summer, they leave a shocking amount and variety of appliances, clothing, and other items behind. Until now, enterprising neighbors in West Philadelphia have simply picked through the goods and claimed what they wanted, with the rest ending up in landfills. But this year, for the first time, Penn officials are collecting and sorting the items, and starting tomorrow, they will begin distributing them to two dozen organizations for the needy, including homeless shelters, food banks and literacy centers.
  • The latest on the PA primary race: Barack Obama spoke in Allentown yesterday, criticizing Republican nominee John McCain on foreign and energy policy, and disagreeing with those who are complaining that the fight for the Democratic nomination is going on too long. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton returned to Pennsylvania yesterday, talking about the economy and concerns of middle-class voters at an afternoon roundtable outside Harrisburg and an evening rally in Bucks County. Finally, Pennsylvanians signed up to vote in the primary in record numbers. On the last day to register (March 24th), about 33,300 first-time voters signed up as Democrats and another 46,000 Pennsylvanians switched to the blue party. In the same period, 6,000 new voters registered as Republicans and 1,800 switched in.
  • Who will really decide the outcome of Pennsylvania's April 22nd primary: the voters, or the delegates? Perhaps the real answer is the gays! Meanwhile, Obama had fun with the college crowd at Penn State.
  • A 17-year-old male knocked on the door of the security booth inside the lobby of the Queen Lane Apartments late Sunday. When the cop inside opened it, the young man fired one shot with an assault rifle, striking the officer in the left hip underneath his bullet-proof vest. Luckily the officer was able to immediately slam shut the door of the bullet-proof booth before the gunman fired twice more. The youth then ran off and Zahir Boddy-Johnson was arrested an hour later for the crime, and will be charged as an adult with attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery, firearms violations and related offenses. The officer is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
  • Meanwhile, the Inquirer takes a closer look at a federal lawsuit filed by the Philadelphia Housing Authority, implicating Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson, a Bush cabinet member.
  • A federal lawsuit filed in December says that President Bush's housing czar, Alphonso Jackson, pressured the Philadelphia Housing Authority to transfer land worth $2 million to Kenny Gamble, a music producer turned developer, and retaliated when the agency would not knuckle under.
