Philadelphia Film Society and TLA Splitting Up After All

When all the on-again, off-again controversy between the Philadelphia Film Society and TLA earlier this year ended in an uneasy truce and just one, united film festival (with one big, ugly name), we kind of assumed that was it and things would go back to normal again. But no! In fact, it looks like the two groups are off again, and for good this time. TLA will continue to produce CineFest in the spring and QFest in the summer under the aegis of the Philadelphia Cinema Alliance, while the Film Society will now produce the Philadelphia Film Festival in the fall, starting in October 2010. The Film Society will also offer year-round film events, including an indie showcase called Filmadelphia Independent and a repertory program of cult and essential movies called Filmadelphia Classics. Film Society executive director J. Andrew Greenblatt says "the city easily can support two mega-festivals," but we're not so sure. Going to both isn't necessarily going to work for the average person's schedule and pocket book. This Phillyist, at least, might have to choose which festival to go to each year.

The Festival Is Here!

We hope you're ready because Philly CineFest/Philadelphia Film Festival 2009 opens tomorrow night! If you haven't put your schedule together and ordered your tickets yet, hit that link and get a move on. Screenings are already selling out. Also keep in mind, if you're a bit strapped for cash, you can see movies for free by volunteering. The request for volunteers in the Philadelphia Film Alliance e-newsletter has gone from being a note in plain text at the bottom of the email to a paragraph in full color at the top, so we think they need you pretty badly! To offer your services, contact Pari Patel at ppatel@phillycinema.org or call 267-765-9800 ext 205.

Curators on Tour

The first of this year's "Evening with the Curators" events will take place tonight at the Art Alliance in Center City. The curators will be out again at Patou in Old City next Thursday. The Philadelphia Cinema Alliance is calling this "Curators on Tour," which we think is a bit of a misnomer; two locations separated from each other by a brisk walk isn't much of a tour. Also, attending this event at all seems a bit pointless this year. In previous years, the Evening with the Curators was your chance to see the festival program before anybody else. This year, the program is already out, tickets are already on sale, and many of us have already decided on our schedules for the festival. Checking in with the curators still might be worth it, though, as you'll get an insider's view of what it was like to program the festival, and learn which movies the programmers themselves enjoyed the most. You might even end up adding one or two films to your schedule that you hadn't even considered seeing before. Plus, they'll be giving away free Smart Water and Vitamin Water at tonight's event. Freebies are always good.

You can now purchase tickets to the Philadelphia Film Festival and CineFest '09 at the official website. If you plan on seeing a goodly number of films, and you can afford it in the current economy, we highly recommend the Film-Access Badge. But whatever you plan to purchase, definitely do it soon before screenings start to sell out. It happens faster than you might think!

Here's the ticketing information for the Philadelphia Film Festival/CineFest, via the festival's Twitter account, @PhillyCinefest. The prices and options are all very similar to those of past festivals.

Philadelphia Film Society Responds

The Philadelphia Film Society has finally put out a response to TLA's recent announcement about the split between the two organizations and the launch of two new festivals. It isn't much of a response, however; it basically says PFS is in the process of reinventing itself and they'll get back to us with more information later. PFS will continue, and will go on providing various services to its members, but it's still unclear what will happen with the Philadelphia Film Festival and the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. It seems certain that they won't occur this year, but the end of the press release suggests they aren't necessarily gone for good. We'll just have to wait for more information, and keep checking Phillyfests.com (although as of this writing there's nothing on the site yet about the split with TLA).

Huge Philly Film Festival Shake-up

We just received a very interesting press release from TLA Entertainment Group. (You can read the release in its entirety at TLAFilmFest.com.) The company says it will organize and present two brand new international film festivals this year: Philadelphia Cinefest, and an as yet unnamed gay and lesbian film festival. The former will run from March 26th to April 5th and feature over 225 films from over 40 countries, as well as the usual international guests, artistic achievement awards, and special events. The gay and lesbian festival will run from July 9th to July 20th. Both festivals will be helmed by Artistic Director Raymond Murray, former Artistic Director of both the Philadelphia Film Festival and the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

This week, take some time to think about how much unnecessary paper we are using up each day. When you see your fifteenth movie of the Philadelphia Film Festival, don't pick up yet another copy of the film guide. Don't print out that third recipe for macaroni and cheese from your favorite food blog, complete with nine extra pages of reader comments. Don't print out the Juno screenplay and re-read again, shaking your head and wondering how that schlock won an Academy award. (Oh wait, maybe that's just me who is doing that). Don't subscribe to a printed publication that can be read online.
