Yet more information is coming out about that shooting in South Philly (a story which has now been appearing on national cable news stations). It turns out the victim, Steven "Butter" Miller, was high on marijuana laced with embalming fluid ("wet") and that he called his brother shortly before the incident to tell him "I can't take it anymore." A series of stresses in the man's personal life apparently led to him snapping. Which still doesn't explain why the cops fired so very many bullets, more than 20 of which struck Miller.
D'oh. The city will be spending $1.3 million dollars to fix a mistake made years ago that violates the contract with the firefighters union. The contract states, reasonably enough, that diesel emissions must be vented outside firehouses, but the city installed air-filtration systems that do not do that.
The casinos are apparently sending attorneys and private investigators to harrass people who signed those anti-casino petitions. Smooth, guys. Smooth. Meanwhile, a Bucks County judge has been appointed to decide whether those groups successfully collected the 20,000 signatures they need to get the casino question on the May 15 ballot.
In case you haven't heard enough about the violence in our town, the Daily News points out that "Philadelphia is the most murder-plagued big city in the country," and they even throw up some numbers to prove it.
On February 11th, the Independence Branch of the Philadelphia Free Library on 7th between Market and Chestnut was flooded when a sprinkler pipe burst. It was the third flood of the library since last summer. Thankfully this one didn't damage any books, like the last two, but it will force the library to close for about a month.
A couple of crazy bastards parachuted down off the Comcast Center Sunday morning. Of course, as is requisite these days when you do something stupid and dangerous, a video was taken and promptly posted on YouTube (although sadly, it has since been taken down). Police are looking for the guys, whom they plan to charge with "criminal trespassing, reckless endangerment and risking a catastrophe."
Despite being named among the top U.S. leaders last month, the Philadelphia school district's chief executive, Paul Vallas, got raked over the coals on Friday by the School Reform Commission for the district's $73.3 million deficit.

Apparently the ground underneath Philly is loaded with bodies. The Philadelphia School District was using a ground-penetrating radar to scan the abandoned Franklin playground in Kensington - which was a cemetery up until the late 1940s, and which they hoped in the future would be the site of a new Frances E. Willard School - when they discovered that as many as 330 human graves were never removed. They probably won't be able to build the school there now. This is where we would normally make a Poltergeist reference (that's a shot from the movie, above), but school district boss Paul Vallas already did it for us: "I know 'Poltergeist' was just a movie, but I'm not taking any chances." (The Daily News isn't helping; they entitled their article on this "Future of new school a matter of grave concern." Argh! Did you have to, Daily News? Did you really have to?)

Oh, Neil Stein, how the mighty have fallen. Neil Stein, former Philly restaurant tycoon, will be sentenced today following his guilty plea last Summer on filing false tax returns. The government is expected to request a sentence of 18-24 months in the pokey - Stein lucked out: the max is nine years. No word on the future of Stein's sole restaurant, Rouge.
