John S. Carter, the former president of the Independence Seaport Museum, pleaded guilty yesterday to charges that he misused more than $1 million of the museum's money to fund his own lavish lifestyle.
But what, you ask, is up in the mayoral race these days, anyway? Well, according to political strategists and recent polls, Nutter's coming up strong (he's "running like Secretariat," in fact), and the race may now be between him and Knox.
While we're on the subject, check out the Inquirer's run-down of a recent mayoral forum. And guess who else is going after Tom Knox now? Mayoral candidates who are not Tom Knox have signed a pledge to support public financing of future Philadelphia campaigns.
It's coming out now that the widening of the PA Turnpike's Northeast Extension will require more private property than previously announced, affecting "property owners in the Montgomery County communities of Plymouth, Whitpain, Worcester, Upper Gwynedd and Towamencin Townships."
So, how about this mayoral race? Who would have figured a month ago that Milton Street would successfully defeat challenges to his place on the ballot (though admittedly for a position as Council at-large, and not as mayor) and would be preparing to go out campaigning, while Brady sat in a courtroom, desperately trying to keep his name on that same ballot (yes, he went to court yesterday, and Mayorpalooza was blogging it; there should be a decision next week, although regardless of what that decision is, there will be an appeal).
Meanwhile, other things went on that actually had nothing to do with Fumo's indictment! For instance, the Atlantic City Council approved a partial smoking ban for casinos in the city; 75% of the casino floor area will have to be smoke free. This half-measure seems to be annoying both the pro-smokers and the anti-smokers, however.

...while people are still targets of violence near the new Pearl Theater.
Never mind our warning to avoid the Taco Bells - all Philly Taco Bell locations have closed and will remain so until given the health department OK.
The news isn't all bad for the fast food industry: a local company was granted $250K to create a refinery for turning restaurant grease into biodiesel fuel. Er...yum?
