Yo, Philly in the News

  • Governor Corzine outlined a $2 billion mass-transit plan that will connect much of South Jersey with Philadelphia. The plan will include service from Glassboro, Pitman, Mantua, Wenonah, Woodbury, Deptford, West Deptford, Westville, Bellmawr, Brooklawn and Gloucester City.

Jim just let us know, via Facebook, that PATCO is currently running shuttle busses on part of the Speedline route. The wait, from his TwitPic account, looks pretty unpleasant, so if you have another means of getting home—or if you want to hang out in the city and have a few drinks before you head back—we'd suggest you not hurry out of Philadelphia just this second.

Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2009 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know!

  • Bad news for Joey Chestnut: Wing Bowl, Philadelphia’s annual gluttonfest will be a local-amateurs-only event once again, WIP sports host Angelo Cataldi proclaimed this morning. Tickets for the Jan. 30 event will go on sale through ComcastTix at 10 a.m., Dec. 15.
  • 43-year-old Tarriq Ali, sentenced to a life term in Delaware, was being transported from California back to Delaware by a private prisoner transportation service when he escaped at Philadelphia International Airport. He is still at large.
  • Meteorologists warn that Tropical Storm Hanna could hit the Philadelphia region with high winds and pounding rain tomorrow night and Saturday.
  • We told you last week about an upcoming vote to increase the Delaware River bridge tolls and PATCO fares. As expected, the vote was approved today, and starting September 14, tolls will go up $1. PATCO fares will also rise by 10 percent. In September 2010, we can expect to see another $1 increase and an additional 10 percent for PATCO fares. This increase will affect the Commodore Barry, Walt Whitman, Ben Franklin, and Betsy Ross bridges, as well as the PATCO high-speed line. For more information, visit the DRPA website.

We thought it was Batman the cops were supposed to hate.

It looks like it’s going to cost you more money to get to work, dinner, or a concert in Philly or New Jersey. The finance committee of the Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) has approved changes to bridge toll and PATCO fare schedules, tentatively effective this September. The full board is expected to vote at an August 20 meeting. If approved, this is what would happen:

  • Perhaps not surprisingly, the DRPA got an earful from angry commuters yesterday at the first of two hearings on proposed toll hikes and PATCO train fare increases.
  • A 50-year-old Phoenixville man tried to break into a Chester Township general-contracting company off I-95 over the weekend, possibly to steal scrap metal. We know this because he was found yesterday morning hanging by his neck from the garage window. He had apparently stood on a sawhorse and poked his head through the window looking for a latch when he slipped and snapped his neck.
  • If the Delaware River Port Authority board approves hikes proposed yesterday, then on September 14th bridge tolls for cars will rise to $4 and PATCO train fares will go up 10 percent. In 2010 bridge tolls would then go to $5 and PATCO fares would rise another 10 percent. Increases tied to inflation would be imposed every two years beginning in January 2013.
  • A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.

Editor Jim found this shining example of singular-plural disagreement on his daily PATCO ride. While "their" may now be considered acceptable as a gender-neutral pronoun, it was intended in the plural here. And unless everyone riding PATCO shares one ticket, everything else should have remained plural, too.

Disturbing news on the commuting front: a man jumped in front of a PATCO train this morning at the Broadway station in an apparent suicide attempt. The man did survive, although DRPA officials confirmed that he had to have one leg partially amputated to get him out from under the train. He’s at Cooper, but his condition is not listed.

This weekend there are several cool dance events going down, most of them on the cheap. We were going to front-load (dance-load?) Frugal today, but then thought it might be better to devote a little more space to each. Besides, with all this slushiness, wouldn't you rather watch other people move than do so yourself?

  • Next up in Milton Street's fraud trial: testimony today from a Vietnamese business owner that Milton supposedly cheated out of $80,000 for a share of a nonexistent airport subcontract.
  • Delaware River Port Authority officials announced yesterday that a $4 million network of cameras with "intelligent" software will be installed along the PATCO rail line and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge starting in April and scheduled to finish up by the end of the year. The cameras are designed to detect intruders or unusual activity in stations, parking lots, platforms and along the rail line.
  • Just a reminder to all those folks who aren’t lucky enough to have an enlightened workplace: Monday is MLK Day, and local transit is adjusting their schedules a bit. PATCO will be running trains every 10-12 minutes during the day (6AM-7PM), which is only a real change for the rush hour (usually it’s 4-5 minutes, at least in theory). SEPTA has listings for various bus routes that will be affected; the El and the Subway seem to be running as normal. NJ Transit rail lines will be running as normal, but the RiverLINE will be on a Sunday schedule, and they suggest you check your bus route to see if any changes are to be made. Amtrak Northeast Corridor will run on the normal schedule.

  • Another wrinkle in the federal investigation into the activities of City Councilman Jack Kelly and his staff: the estranged wife of his chief of staff is providing information to authorities in the case.
  • Editor Jim and Sarah ride PATCO together every morning to work, and every afternoon from work. As many PATCO riders know, one of the entrances at 8th and Market was closed last week so that the turnstiles could be converted to "FREEDOM gates." (Ed. note: Are those like Freedom Fries?)

Pennsylvania ranks very low amongst other states in requiring breakfast to be served in its schools to the children of low income families. A new memorial design for the President's House, which "would allow visitors to peer down through a glass shed and view archaeological remnants of an 18th-century house once occupied by presidents and slaves," will be unveiled tomorrow night at Freedom Theatre. "The DRPA, whose board meets today to adopt its annual budget,...

The Attorney General's Office has accused Former State Rep. Frank LaGrotta of giving his relatives fake jobs in order to pay them thousands in taxpayer dollars. A cheval-de-frise (an iron-tipped log that's placed in a riverbed along with many others in order to gore the hulls of enemy warships) was recently found at the bottom of the Delaware River at the Sunoco Logistics pier in South Philadelphia. It's a relic from the mid-1770s, and...

When you go to New York or Princeton, are you tired of taking the R7 to Trenton? Do you find the schedule isn’t always convenient or the train gets so delayed you miss the New Jersey Transit train? If you don’t want to risk life and limb on a Chinatown bus, there is another option that is much cheaper and runs more frequently, but the downside is that you have to go to Camden.

Summer can be hard in the city, what with the smog and humidity and the cement oven beneath our feet. Phillyist plans to balance sticky subway air with some getting back to nature, and you can too. Greater Phildelphia Cares has a bunch of volunteer opportunities that will connect you with the soil. Which we hear is nice and cool once you dig down a few inches.

  • Meanwhile, other things went on that actually had nothing to do with Fumo's indictment! For instance, the Atlantic City Council approved a partial smoking ban for casinos in the city; 75% of the casino floor area will have to be smoke free. This half-measure seems to be annoying both the pro-smokers and the anti-smokers, however.
  • The foot fetish guy has moved on to South Philly, but we've also got a description now: "thin, with a light to medium complexion, 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-10, with widely spaced, deep-set eyes and a light, salt-and-pepper beard." Call 215-685-3251 or -3265 if you've got any information on this creep.
