What is it about First Fridays that makes the weather come? It really does seem like every fourth Friday, the weather turns to crap, just in time to descend on art-loving urban hipsters traveling from gallery to gallery to imbibe free wine. If we feel like trading the Film Festival for First Friday, here's where we'll be imbibing:

Have your Valentine’s Day activities planned out yet? No? Us neither (and we really have no excuse). Luckily foobooz is looking out for you, or at least your stomach. They have an extensive list of eat-out options and specials, including many singles events, to get you through the (perhaps dreaded) day. Our favorite is the Puppy Love Valentine’s Party hosted by Devil’s Alley tomorrow night at the Painted Bride; $35 buys tickets for one person and one puppy, with proceeds going to PAWS. We’re also considering the My Bloody Valentine masquerade ball at Jose Pistola’s the night of, which has the benefit of costing $5. After all, money can’t buy you love. We’re guessing that you’ll have to do some major haggling to get reservations at some of the swanker places at this late date—but love don’t come easy (somebody stop us please).

The weather's gotten colder, but First Friday still has some goodies that should get you out of your homes, apartments, and cardboard boxes. So put on your fall jacket, nip a little wine or whiskey to keep warm, and get out to First Friday for some great events.

Moving on from there, we thought we'd maybe hit one of Headlong Dance Theater's First Friday performances (happening at 8PM and 9PM) at the Spirit Wind Studio, across from the Painted Bride. Phillyist loves them some Headlong, and this performance is free, which makes it especially worthy of our affection. Plus, there will be beer.

"Where's the Philadelphia Orchestra?" you might ask. Well, they're on tour of the US for the next two weeks. We'll certainly miss them, but wish them the best while on the road.

Starting in 1999 as an artist development showcase by Mercedes Martinez and Tracey Moore, of the Jazzyfatnastees, Black Lily serves as a sounding board and promotional organization for women in the arts. To date, it has helped launch the careers of such artists as Jill Scott, Floetry and Jaguar Wright.

The Bryn Mawr Film Institute will screen Scene Not Heard: Women in Philadelphia Hip-Hop this Wednesday night at 7:30. A documentary brought to life by Maori Karmael Holmes of Black Lily fame, the film examines the unique place of women in the local hip-hop scene and the special challenges they face in a culture that doesn't always appreciate a strong female voice. The "cast" includes favorites Floetry, Bahamadia, and Lady B; there's also some rare performance footage; and we hear Michele Byrd-McPhee of Montäzh (a group of whom Phillyist is very fond--first date with the husband doncha know) drops some insight as well. Ursula Rucker's even in there; the thing's chock full of delightfulness!
