If Oprah Winfrey dictates your reading list (we don't judge), you're in for a treat! Tonight at 7:30 p.m., the Free Library hosts O Book Club faves: David Wroblewski, author of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and Uwem Akpan, who wrote Say You're One of Them, Oprah's current book club selection. Admission is free.

In an effort to draw attention to the fact that nearly 22% of Philadelphians read below a basic level, the Center for Literacy plans to hold a flash mob at an undisclosed location in the city. Readers will "freeze" in position at the same time in the latest form of performance art, probably made most famous thanks to Oprah's giant mob in Chicago. If you would like to participate, sign up at the Center for Literacy's site to find out more details and to learn the location of the mob! If you participate, check in with the Phillyist and let us know how it went. We love to hear about what you are doing out there.

Sawtelle Needed Some Sawing

I love dogs. I love Hamlet. I love novels. I love Oprah. And I love writing. Put them all together and we should have my most favoritest book out there in The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, 2008's most sold (lots of write-ups are saying most "successful," but we readers know that most sales doesn't necessarily mean most success) debut novel. However, I also love editing, and David Wroblewski's editor completely let him down by allowing the novel to swell well beyond the number of pages it needed to be. This is not me being afraid of long books—give me a meaty Rushdie novel any day—but this book needed some trimming, I would say at least 100 pages' worth. But honestly, Wroblewski's debut novel is better than my non-existent one, and I honor him for giving the Hamlet story a go. The good news is that when he speaks at the Free Library, the clock will edit him, though I have no evidence that he himself in the flesh would run on longer than he should. Let's hope he brings his American style of magic realism and willingness to experiment to the Library. If he does, it will be a reading worth seeing.

Oprah’s said it. The helpful Victoria Secret clerks say it. Our great-aunt Holly used to say it all the time: a well-fitting bra makes the woman. Today you can acquire said well-fitting brassiere and help raise money for breast cancer research at the same time at Fit for the Cure. Wacoal certified fitters will be on hand in the lingerie department at Macy’s Center City today from 11AM-5PM; for every woman who participates in a fitting of a Wacoal or DKNY bra, they will donate $2 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. For every Wacoal or DKNY bra purchased, they will donate an additional $2. Unfortunately it does specify “every woman;” we were kind of hoping to head over with some guys and guilt them into trying something on “for the cause.” Oh, well, have to save that for a Saturday night at home…

Fall is a busy time for Phillyist, and as such we don’t really get to put in as much volunteer face time as we do in the slow days of summer. So ‘tis the season to poke around and find some easy and painless ways to support local causes.

In this virtual world of ours, it's become really easy to forget common courtesy sometimes. The handwritten letter is practically a thing of the past, and thank-you notes are about to make their exit, as well. Pity, really, because people like to know that they're loved and that you appreciate the nice things they do for you.

As fall settles in and another calendar page gets turned, thoughts turn from bbq's and vacations to holidays and the realization that '06 is coming to an end. With all that going on, with change in the air, we wonder what is it the -ists ponder?

...Because that about sums it up for us.

We -ists are an eclectic bunch, but there's a couple of things we all love: famous people, social causes, and wacky local facts. Join us as we starf**k, get virtuous, and learn across the -ist network!

...Betrothal: Titty McTitterson and that White Trash guy who once sang a song about --cowboys, was it? -- are tying the knot. May god have mercy on their offspring. (Via .)

After advising on dildoes and the Depot, we at Phillyist have decided to answer a more tender, loving question. Don’t mind the candlelight dinners and the long walks on the beach. We’re getting in touch with our Oprah side.
