Philly art scenes are nothing if not eclectic, as the opening of KYL/D’s new dance center in the Italian Market demonstrates. First, there’s the variety of dance on offer: their open house this Sunday includes performances of flamenco, salsa, and Bollywood/Bhangra Indian dancing. The open house also celebrates the completion of two murals, 45 feet worth, by Isaiah Zagar, who will also be in attendance with his team of artisan collaborators. In addition to the works and shmoozing, you’ll be able to check out the classes that will be offered, and wish the good folks at the non-profit well with a small donation.

Monday: Michael was officially sworn in as the 98th mayor of Philadelphia at the Academy of Music. His inaugural address was more or less a regurgitation of everything he said during his campaign. ::yawn:: But at least he got down at his inaugural party, as proven by the insert video.

  • The Convention Center expansion project was halted on Christmas Eve when the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia obtained an injunction ordering wrecking crews to stop work. The preservationists want to save the two small but historic Broad Street buildings that workers were set to dismantle. Today they'll travel to Harrisburg to ask a Commonwealth Court judge to convert the temporary demolition ban into a permanent one.
  • If you ever look at our weekly theatre listings (and we hope you do!), you may have noticed that one local company has been conspicuously absent from the mix: the Philadelphia Theatre Company. They're starting their season off a little late this year so that the finishing touches can be made to their new home: the Suzanne Roberts Theatre on Broad and Lombard Streets.

The weather forecast has changed, and it's no longer supposed to rain today. Good thing, too, because that means that it should be nice and dry (okay, maybe nice and sticky, what with a daytime high in the upper 80s and humidity to spare) for tonight's First Friday goings-on. Here are a few of our picks if you're out and about tonight.

Best of the week is compiled and edited by Seattlest's Dan Gonsiorowski.
