In recent weeks, the slumping American economy in the fallout of the sub-prime lending crisis has usurped the role of the war in Iraq as the hot issue in our national discourse. What short memories we have. Well, here’s an update:

On Thursday, January 25, the Kelly Writers House will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the publication of Jack Kerouac's with a marathon reading of the full text of the book. Readers will include local literary luminaries (say that three times fast!), as well as folks affiliated with the House. But, here's where you can come in:

Big music night coming up. On Thursday, a slew of acts signed to the Barsuk music label are taking over Philly. World Café Live will play host to The Long Winters with Menomena and What Made Milwaukee Famous, and Mates of State with the Starlight Mints will be playing at the Starlight Ballroom.

  • This past week, older men were taking the law into their own hands against thieves - allegedly, of course. Example number 1: On Thursday morning, 23-year-old William Edney tried to carjack 78-year-old George Newton's SUV in West Philly. Newton gave him the keys, but noticed the young man was having trouble changing gears and holding his gun at the same time, and so pulled his own piece and shot the guy in the jaw. Edney started to drive off, but apparently not at high speeds, because Newton was able to follow and shoot him again. Newton said, "Both windows were down so I didn't mess up any of my glass." That is hardcore. Somehow, Edney was able to drive himself to the hospital and get treatment; he's in stable condition now - and being charged by the police.
  • Not that we needed it, but this weekend was yet more proof of how being a Phillies fan is by far the most aggravating occupation known to mankind. After interviewing Dawn Staley on Tuesday, Phillyist stuck around in D.C. for the Phils' four-game series against the Nationals. We now realize that, as usual, our optimism of Thursday afternoon was a big mistake.

The spooky program will be held on the Gazela, docked at Penn's landing between Market and Chestnut streets. On Thursday, the program runs from 7 - 9 p.m. Friday, and Saturday, however, is 7 - 11 p.m. while Sunday is 6 - 10 p.m. The Guild will hold "Manic Matinees" (yes, alliteration is quite frightening) on Oct. 29 and Oct. 30 from 1 - 4 p.m. We're not sure how the ship will haunt you during the daylight, but if anything can haunt you in broad daylight, it's probably a ship.

http://www.fox.com/reunion/">Reunion, which is a new twist on the old six-good-looking-young-friends theme. The tagline is: "In 1986 they were best of friends. By 2005, one will be murdered. All will be suspects." Each episode is another year, and the characters go from age 18 to 38 during the course of the season. It's an interesting concept, but it sounds like it would make a better movie than TV series—how could they possibly make a second season? The creators of Reunion deserve some props for originality, so this one might be worth checking out.
