Earlier this week, we had the chance to check out bluegrass legend Alison Krauss, and now we get to see Nickel Creek's farewell tour with Fiona Apple (strange combination, I know.) Now Nickel Creek is also well-known in the bluegrass community with their standard instrumentation of fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and bass, but they've definitely jumped out of the standard bluegrass mold. They refer to their music as "progressive acoustic." I refer to it as "kick-ass bluegrass." Really, it's bluegrass with a twist - it's updated, interesting, and current. The band is made up of permanent (well, not anymore) members Chris Thile (mandolin), Sara Watkins (violin/fiddle), her brother Sean Watkins (guitar) and not-so-permanent Mark Schatz (string bass).

Schoolyard Heroes, a Seattle punk-rock band, is shooting their latest video in West Chester, PA and you can be IN IT! They aren't your average punk-rock band (their MySpace tag line is: I vomit out my heart for you) and they are definitely far from your skinny-pants-loving-emo-crowd. Their gore-loving sophomore effort, Fantastic Wounds (is there really a wound that's fantastic?), had critics raving. Will their third album, "Abominations" be just as ground-breaking and horrifying? You can find out on September 18th.

Philly's sweethearts of the 80's music scene, The Hooters, will be playing the World Cafe as part of Hifi House's 50th Anniversary Bash on the 16th. We had no idea the band was still together, but apparently they've been touring Europe for the past few years. It's about time they came back to show a little home town love.

The band emerged onto a darkened stage, to a background of computer-provided crickets and wind. From the moment they launched into "A Forest," Nouvelle Vague had the audience. Stripped down to drums, guitar, computer and a pair of singers, the band seemed tiny on the imposingly huge and high stage of the World Café Live. The space seemed divorced entirely from the smoky jostle of the punk clubs and the intimacy of the jazz lounges that were natural habitats of the band’s twin musical inspirations. But even in the cavernous enormity of the venue, the band gave a show impossible to ignore.

Kate White, Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan, will be in Philadelphia tonight. White, appearing at the Free Library of Philadelphia (1901 Vine Street), will give a speech entitled "The 5 Best Things I Learned at Cosmo." White has been editor at the montly magazine for seven years. We've all been talking about not only White's successful run at Cosmo, but also about how she could only learn five things during seven years. We're baffled, but we'll be at the reading tonight to get some answers.
