We needed some time to recuperate after yesterday's celebrations, and to get over the pleasant shock of last night's easy Eagles win (thank you, Santa!). But now, here we are again, back with a bevy of Philly-flavored news items.
This weekend in English football has as its highlights back to back "derby days" which will see crosstown rivals doing battle against each other. Come out to the pub, grab a coffee or a beer, and imagine The Eagles playing a game against a team from Northeast Philly.
Good thing for TO we don't celebrate Guy Fawkes Day in this neck of the woods.
C'mon, admit it: you haven't washed that filthy old car of yours since Clinton was in office. So why not take it up to the parking lot next to Walt's Circle Tavern - right off Oxford Circle on Route 1 in Northeast Philly - between noon and 5PM tomorrow and get it washed by the Philly Roller Girls? (Check out our fun interview with them here.) They'll do it for you (on their skates, we hope) for only $8 (with a half-price discount for police and fire vehicles), and the money will go to fund their new travel team, who are headed to Las Vegas in November to face the Sin City Roller Girls. While you're there, you can pick up tickets to the league's first ever championship bout, which takes place September 10th, and features competition between two undefeated teams: the Broad Street Butchers and the Philthy Britches.

Long before Robert Downey Senior made it the subject of a documentary film, and before and the Project for Public Spaces named it among the Top 12 Public Squares in the U.S. and Canada, I fell in love with Rittenhouse Square. It is, without question, one of my favorite spaces in the city. When high school friends and I would come to into the city for a Saturday escape from the pseudo-suburban wilds of Northeast Philly or as an after school diversion via the Broad Street line, Rittenhouse Square was often among our stops. We visited it often, so I know the park well; I have lain on its lawn, gathered 'round the goat statue, climbed the lion, splashed my feet in the Goose Girl Fountain and kissed the frog statue. And yet, after years of harmless, youthful loitering amongst its foliage, Rittenhouse Square has lost none of its allure for me.
Quite frankly, Stephen A. Smith has his finger dug into the neck of this fine city (we think that the neck is located somewhere in Northeast Philly), taking its pulse and converting into prose that reminds us of rainbows. And so, what Stephen A. says is gospel around these parts. Just look at Sunday, for instance: in the Inquirer, Smith took the Eagles to task for their poor offense and the Eagles responded with a poor offensive showing yesterday afternoon, beating the 49ers by a mere 39 points.
