Both the Inquirer and the Daily News are taking a look this morning at the three finalists for the job of chief executive officer of the School District of Philadelphia, and the Inquirer also has a look at the 45 advisory committee members who will actually be interviewing the finalists and selecting the CEO from among them.
A high-profile area World War II veteran who has served as a frequent speaker, museum advisory board member, and reunion organizer has a preliminary hearing scheduled today on charges that he used $84,102.48 of unauthorized funds from fellow soldiers for such purchases as a $28,000 Mini Cooper for his girlfriend.
A dude in Elk County, PA thinks he shot some photos of Bigfoot in the Allegheny National Forest, and the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization agrees; they say it's probably a juvenile sasquatch. But they're asking that the guy not reveal the exact location where he took the pictures, for fear that people will destroy the animal's habitat. Park rangers, btw, say it's probably just a skinny, mangy bear. (Via Jen)
Tonight Michael Nutter will be celebrating his 50th birthday with a campaign fundraiser party at a restaurant in Old City.
Holy crud! The bill banning trans fats in Philly eateries (pre-packaged foods are excepted, so our beloved Tastykakes are safe, thank God) has already passed! Of course, it doesn't begin to take even partial effect until September 1st of this year, and only finally goes into full effect a year after that. But still, that was fast!
Fattah's plan to beat Philly gun violence, which he announced yesterday, has three basic parts: more cops, better rewards for tips, and more surveillance cameras.

Phillyist has to admit, we had to gag our inner fan girl and stick her in the closet in order to compose this post. She's convinced if we put the word out that author Neil Gaiman (squueeeeee!) will be speaking at Temple University's Mitten Hall (1913 North Broad Street) at 8PM on Thursday as part of their Poet and Writers Series, that there would be a sort of fantasy lovers stampede that would prevent her from getting to see him speak. I assured her that there's likely enough Gaiman goodness to go around. For the love our comics, please don't prove us wrong.
