Fun around town, for $10 or less:

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

  • A man outside at a New Year's party in East Germantown, confronted by police for firing his gun into the air, turned the gun on the officers, and was in turn fired upon. Although neither police nor the gunman were hurt, three people inside the house where the party was going on were struck by stray bullets. A similar incident happened only ten minutes later in North Philadelphia. Police asked men to surrender their weapons, and instead they fled and one turned his gun on the officers, and was subsequently shot in the ankle. In all, three were arrested and four injured.

  • One thing Philadelphians didn't do to celebrate New Year's was watch the Mummer's Parade; it was postponed, due to rain, until this Saturday, January 6th.
  • The wife of a University of Pennsylvania economics professor was beaten to death in her Main Line home last Friday, and evidence now suggests that what appeared to be a break-in may have been staged to look that way; it's possible she knew her killer.
  • Still looking for a swanky to do this New Year's Eve? There are still 250 tickets left to the 12Midnight party at the Crystal Tea Room. Why bring this up now, right as you're trying to finish all your holiday shopping while not flipping off that idiot who took your parking spot? Because if you don't get 'em now, it's Ryan Seacrest and a bottle of bad champagne for you on December 31.

It doesn't feel like the holiday season to us, what with the temperature being more like fall than winter these past few weeks. A friend of ours captured our holiday mood best in his Christmas card. He crossed out the "Wishing you a special Christmas" message and wrote in "Up Yours." Don't be like us. Don't give in to the holiday humbugs. You have a few days left to get all kinds of original on...

  • The foot fetish guy has moved on to South Philly, but we've also got a description now: "thin, with a light to medium complexion, 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-10, with widely spaced, deep-set eyes and a light, salt-and-pepper beard." Call 215-685-3251 or -3265 if you've got any information on this creep.

    • First off, let us say that although this particular item isn't about Philly, nor does it take place in Philly, or are far as we know involve Philly in any way, we're including it because it's big news, even if we mentioned it in yesterday's Whiz, too: NASA has set a time line for the realization of a manned Moon Base. Naturally, we have begun making plans to replicate their plans on the dark side of the moon for our evil Phillyist moon lair (so what if there's no source for solar energy on the dark side of the moon? We'd syphon it from NASA. D'uh. We did say it'd be an evil moon lair.) And now a little closer to our current, non-lunar home...
    • Bobby Clarke returns to the Flyers' family - this time as senior VP.
    • If you're craving Mexican, you may want to think twice before running "to the border;" some local Taco Bells have been linked to recent cases of E. Coli. Who knew they replaced that chihuahua with Montezuma?
