Remember all that talk about “mandates?” Well, if Wendy Lee's story is any indication, Obama’s got it in the bag.

PW reports on what we know from living through (and with) it: Geeks are rife here, and their scenes lush and varied.

In the spirit of all things Eagles, check out this cool Eagles sweatshirt. It's kinda weird that it's designed by Alyssa Milano, but looks cute nonetheless.

Phillyist Ross sent this video to us a few days ago. We thought it was an idea for the daily video post, until we got about thirty seconds in – and then we saw that he was actually sending a Proofreading Philly submission.
...Monday night's fireworks at Penn's Landing. Enjoy!
Phillyist, like untold thousands in the Delaware Valley, resolved to be more active this year. If you’re one of those thousands and are looking for a place to start, consider combining it with that other favorite resolution, volunteering in the community. Back On My Feet running club lets you do just that: you’ll run in Center City with homeless men from local shelters. It may seem odd at first glance, but the non-profit is committed to promoting self-sufficiency by using running as a way to build confidence, strength, and self-esteem. The organization just started this past summer, and already has gotten attention and accolades aplenty. The idea started with founder Anne Mahlum, who would pass by a homeless shelter on her morning run, and slowly established a good rapport with the men who were outside. July 3rd marked the first outing of the Homeless Running Club, and now there are four teams that work with three area shelters. Each team runs at least three times a week, giving you plenty of opportunity to build relationships with your teammates and work up to that four-minute mile. BOMF is establishing connections with local businesses and job training centers, and one member recently accepted a job, the first concrete success story of the program. From the sounds of it, though, the story of every runner is a successful one, as the goals set within the program and the dedication of the staff inspire members to not only reap the health benefits, but to use the confidence gained in the program to effect positive change in their lives. The line that made Phillyist cry? “No one ever runs by themselves because life is a lot harder when you go through it alone.” Amen, sister.

Little-known fact: There are a hell of a lot of blogs in Philly. While we here try to hold our own, there are a lot of good stories out there just waiting to be read from around the Philly blog community. Here are a few that popped up throughout the week. Go ahead, check it out, we won't get jealous. Just come on back here when you're good and ready. We'll have cookies and soy milk waiting.*
You probably heard by now that some important nominations got announced this morning: the Razzies! We like that they nominated Hilary Duff and Haylie Duff together, as one entity, for Worst Actress in Material Girls. We're kind of sad that Kristanna Loken got nominated in that category, too, though, because we went to her movie premiere party in Philly and interviewed her and took a picture of her and everything. Lady in the Water, which we reviewed and didn't think was really all that bad, also got plenty of nominations, as did The Wicker Man, another review recipient of ours.
We don't know about you, but it's friggin cold out there. Well, not for some of you. It seems as though places that are supposed to be cold are warm and places that are supposed to be warm are cold. Or maybe that's just us. Either way, we're freezing.
So your New Year's Resolution was to lose a little weight, work out more, maybe not eat out so much. That last needs to be put on hold for a week: University City District is offering up its fourth University City Dining Days, running from January 11th to the 18th. Twenty-one restaurants are offering up fixed three-course menus in three price ranges: $20, $25, and $30, with some places offering two-for-one dining. Phillyist does the lunch rounds in UCity, and has been to most of these places; while we love Fatou & Fama ($20) and Lemongrass ($25), wethinks perhaps such a nighttime occasion might call for a little White Dog splurge ($30). Maybe, if we're feeling saucy, some Penne ($30). The promotion has grown in popularity each time they've run it, so reservations (phoned in to the restaurant of your choice) are strongly recommended; there's even $7 parking at 38th and Walnut and 40th and Walnut from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. with restaurant validation. Alas, tax, tips, and drinks aren't included, but still and yet most of these places are a good deal. And if you hit Score at Strikes Bowling Lounge ($30 for two), you'll even be able to fit in some of that exercise you resolved to do.
