Friday night marked my third time seeing The New Pornographers, and as I've come to expect, they totally rocked the house. After a fantastic set by Immaculate Machine and a really solid set by Emma Pollock (whose album, , has been on pretty frequent rotation on my work computer), they took the stage, ready to perform to a sold-out crowd at The Trocadero.

Our love affair with The New Pornographers began when we were still in high school and heard "My Slow Descent into Alcoholism" for the first time. We couldn't relate then (maybe we can a little now), but we knew we liked it. It was bouncy and fun and like nothing we'd ever heard before.

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

, has been getting outstanding reviews. (Really. Google her.)

If you follow Philly music, last spring you probably heard about a great alt-country band called One Star Hotel who broke up after opening for Wilco on a European tour. You may also have heard about how OSH’s front man and lyricist, Steve Yutzy-Burkey, started a new band with his wife Krista (keys & vox), former OSH bandmate Rick Sieber (bass), and Scott French (drums). You might have heard that the band was called The Swimmers, and was based on the stunning John Cheever short story, “The Swimmer.” In a matter of weeks they became one of the most hotly anticipated bands of the spring, garnering even more buzz after their first show at the Khyber in April 2006. And if you’re really up on your music gossip, you know that they had secret fans all over the city, waiting and panting all through the globally-warmed fall after The Swimmers were forced into hiatus while Krista recovered from an emergency spinal surgery.

Believe it or not, it's been almost a whole year since the alternative rock station we all knew and loved as Y100 disappeared off the airwaves, victim of a format change, and the variety of music on Philly radio got that much smaller. Luckily, Y100 didn't vanish completely. It just retreated to that same wonderful place that Phillyist calls home - the internet!

Franz Ferdinand comes to the Tower Theater tonight with Sons & Daughters and Cut Copy for another one of those good, old-fashioned rock concerts. Yes, the New Pornographers are in town tonight, so you should probably tear your hair out all day trying to decide between the two. What's hilarious is that while you do that, the last remaining tickets will be sold, leaving you stuck with My Chemical Romance. Or, you know, just not going to a concert.

The New Pornographers bring Twin Cinema and the sketchy Neko Case to the Trocadero tonight for one of those rock concert things. No word on whether or not David Cross will be there to boo Case. (Go read the latest issue of MAGNET, kids.)
