Fun around town, for $10 or less:

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

The weather's gotten colder, but First Friday still has some goodies that should get you out of your homes, apartments, and cardboard boxes. So put on your fall jacket, nip a little wine or whiskey to keep warm, and get out to First Friday for some great events.

If you're a regular reader of Phillyist, you may have noticed a certain Sith Lord pop up on the sidebar a little while ago, demanding your attention. But in case he wasn't clear enough, we wanted to break it down for you: Phillyist wants you! We want you to write for us! Come, be part of the new media and the expanding -ist empire! All you need is the ability to write, and perhaps some proof of said ability (in the form of writing samples). Some experience and knowledge of the Philly area is kind of important, too, since we're a Philadelphia blog and all. We're particularly interested in getting a sports writer (as our old one has left for greener pastures, alas). Also, we currently don't post much on the weekends, but we're thinking of expanding into that area, so we could use some people who have some fun ideas for Saturday and Sunday posts.

  • That "body-parts scandal" is getting bigger and more disgusting all the time. If you haven't heard the story, it turns out a NJ company (now closed) harvested unscreened tissue from thousands of dead bodies, providing it to patients in need of transplants all over the country, and making huge profits. Many Philly patients have been affected; the Philadelphia Inquirer's most recent article on the subject tells the harrowing story of a mother of two from Northeast Philadelphia, who was told there was a recall related to her spinal surgery - which is right off something you never want to hear. Then she learned the bone and marrow she got were illegally harvested from a cadaver; and were not screened for infectious disease; and that she contracted hepatitis C from them. Ugh. Ick. Agh.
