Most estimates put the number of illegal immigrants in this country at around 5 million. Some view this fact as evidence that illegal immigration is a struggle akin to the civil rights movement of the 1950s. That may sound a bit far-fetched, but in many ways the struggle is similar. We face a public that is in many parts of the nation exceptionally hostile to any illegal immigrants, regardless of their plight. Additionally, the federal government seems to be acting in a way that it deems best for the nation, rather than taking the rampant xenophobia of constituents into account. To look at what is in store for this issue, it may help to review the candidates’—and former candidates’—stances.

Often when Americans think of whom to vote for both in primaries and in presidential elections, we forget to consider the candidates’ lives before they were candidates. Here are some lesser-known bits about the presidential hopefuls:

• Londonist pondered who might be the next sponsors of the London Eye and whether or not readers would be willing to donate £1,000 each for a Londonist Eye.
• Shanghaiist was shocked to find a cameltoe in the city's only English-language paper.

As a member of the Writers’ Guild of America, I am not really allowed to write posts for Phillyist, so you probably have noticed that there hasn’t been much from me on the site since the Philadelphia Eagles’ merciful demise. (By the way, this is all code for “I have been feeling really lazy” – Karl Rove’s words – lately and have been trying to do as little thinking as possible.) But something annoyed the hell out of me today and I needed someplace to vent, so here I am.

What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

The Penn and Drexel Cycling Clubs are co-hosting The Arkema Group Schuylkill Challenge Bicycle Race in Fairmount Park this weekend. (Note that the title of that last page we linked to predicts the winner as Penn - we wonder if the folks at Drexel, not to mention the other schools, have noticed that yet.)
