Don’t know about you, but when we think about driving in the city we start to get slight palpitations. Part of it could be that we’re used to walking and Septa; the thought of paying exorbitant amounts to park in UCity on a Friday night convinces us that the El isn’t so bad after all. Plus, there’s storage: when we were living on the outskirts of Center City a parking spot would have cost 2/3 of our rent. Don’t get us started on the exhaust fumes, particularly those from the ancient chariots some of us have to drive around in because after parking costs we can’t afford an upgrade. But there are times when having a car is a necessity, even in the city. You need one to escape the heat and exhaust for the cool ocean breeze in the summer for instance, or to do an IKEA run. And so a balance must be struck.

  • David C. Sicoli, a Philadelphia priest with "a long history of abusive and manipulative relationships with adolescents," according to a grand jury report, has finally been defrocked by the Roman Catholic Church. No criminal charges were ever lodged against him. Numerous complaints were filed about his alleged misconduct with boys, however, and other priests warned about him, but the church continued to simply transfer him to different parishes, and even ended up naming him associate director of the CCD youth program for the entire Philadelphia area.

  • Interstates 78, 80, and 81 were all locked up and shut down for a good part of last week, mostly due to poor response to the ice and snow, and to accidents caused by same. Worst of all was I-78, which for a while had a 50-mile backup, stranding hundreds of motorists for hours, some for more than 24 hours. Needless to say, many folks were none too happy, and let the governor know about it. When he heard, he wasn't too happy, either. Btw, the interstates were finally cleared and reopened yesterday.
  • Hey, Dr. J might buy the Sixers! Or, to be more accurate, he's the leader of a group of folks who are thinking of purchasing the team, according to a Daily News source.
  • On Memorial Day Weekend, Americans all over the country gather together to remember those who have died in service of our nation...by getting a really good deal on a pair of shoes, and then going outside and partying in them. Hey, we're Americans; buying and partying is what we do. Oh, and eating a lot of barbecue. Anyway, here's some stuff you can do in Philly to celebrate your Memorial Day Weekend - some of it even vaguely appropriate to the holiday! (We're sure we didn't get everything, though, so check here for even more, or if you have some cool weekend events of your own to share, let us know about them in the comments.)
