Tonight is an exciting night. Tonight is the night that Andrew Bird plays at the Fillmore at the TLA. It's so exciting that my brother flew in from Utah to see me him. Though if you haven't gotten your tickets then tough shit; it's sold out. You can always try to see if anyone has an extra; they are selling on South Street. You'll be lucky if you land this hot ticket. Of course, if you can't, you can always head out to one of the many restaurants on South Street (as we told you earlier this week, Eight Days of Eat continues till May 23rd). Better yet - do both!
Kelly Reichardt, whose new film Old Joy opens today at Ritz at the Bourse, is one of America's most under-appreciated directors. In large part, this is because she eschews a lot of the tricks that Indiewood directors use to get attention from audiences. Her style is unadorned but quietly effective; it works on your emotions even without you realizing it. Her debut, the 1994 film River of Grass, uses this to great effect. It's partially an ironic send-up of the lovers-on-the-run genre, positing two disaffected protagonists who are so eager to escape their lives that they flee a police pursuit that doesn't exist. What you remember, though, is the way that Reichardt carefully evokes people and place.
