A while back, we asked you all to help us create a Philadelphia playlist, in order that we might fill a gaping void on the iTunes music store - the lack of a Philly-themed iTunes Essentials Groove. You commented and told us your selections, and the staff got into it, too. Then, word spread about what we were doing, and others gave suggestions. We compiled all the various selections, discarded those that were not available on iTunes, as well as one or two that we really just couldn't bring ourselves to include, and published an iMix at the Music Store. We'll be petitioning Apple to turn this iMix into an official Groove one of these days, but for now, and without further ado, we present to you the direct iTunes link to the Phillyist iMix! Detailed track lists of the iTunes-friendly and non-iTunes-friendly playlists can be found after the jump. Thanks for helping us put this together, Philly! We think we ended up with a pretty decent bunch of songs here, ranging across various genres and eras of music, but all strongly representative of our town. Some of you might disagree, and demand that certain tracks be removed and others be included. All we can say to you is...you should have commented when you had the chance! :p

An alert Phillyist reader was wandering about the iTunes Music Store recently and noticed that although the "My Groove" section includes many playlists celebrating specific cities, a number of them -Ist cities, there is no playlist for Philadelphia. Obviously, this is a horrible oversight, and must be remedied! Therefore, we propose that you, our faithful readers, nominate songs for a Philadelphia playlist. They can be songs by a Philly band, songs that make you think of Philly, songs that mention Philly - whatever, as long as there's a strong Philly connection of some kind. We'll pick the best ones, compile them into a final list, and send it on to Apple. Obviously there's no guarantee it'll end up in the iTunes Music Store, but we'll do our best. Hey, maybe we'll put together an iMix, too. But let's actually get that playlist together first. Post your song suggestions as comments to this post, or send them via email. Don't forget a title for the playlist, too. We're sure you can do better than "I <3 New York."

Believe it or not, it's been almost a whole year since the alternative rock station we all knew and loved as Y100 disappeared off the airwaves, victim of a format change, and the variety of music on Philly radio got that much smaller. Luckily, Y100 didn't vanish completely. It just retreated to that same wonderful place that Phillyist calls home - the internet!
