Fun around town, for $10 or less:
From the creative pursuits of the local public artists to the Mural Arts Program, you can pretty much count on seeing some form of street art no matter where in town you go. But in an artform where what goes up today could be covered by tomorrow, permanence is never guaranteed.
There’s much ado about the royals spending some time in Philadelphia this weekend. And while they’ll be attending a Mural Arts Program reception, visiting with International House students, and “partying” society-style at the 150th Anniversary Academy Ball and Concert, all we’ll be thinking is, how can we score some face time with the prince?
When Phillyist returned a truck to 12th & Washington not long ago, bright colors caught our eye as we crossed Carpenter on our way home. As we walked over to check out what turned out to be a mural on this building, something much more rare and more beautiful emerged from a abandoned lot: genuine graffiti pieces. Phillyist doesn’t mean the mural wall in the playground (which isn’t half-bad, actually) - if you’re there, wrong spot. Walk east about 200 feet, look across the street to the lot next to the orange eyes, and feast your own. Now, we have nothing against the Mural Arts Program, or permission pieces - they make Phillyist feel warm and at home. And we don’t pine for the days of Yes Yes Y'all even though we think the 5 train in New York could use some Krylon. But the creativity that’s shown in challenging or unexpected places is the heart of graffiti - where it is and what it is can't be separated.
