And Before You Know It Philly Will Be No Fun At All...

So you may have heard: New Jersey has kidnapped the 2010 Dad Vail Regatta. Well, more like bought. Why Rumson, NJ has an extra $250,000 to throw around, we don't know. But what we do know is the Dad Vail has been raced on the Schuylkill River every year since 1953. Over those 50+ years it has become an integral part of Philly sports culture. To take it off the Schuylkill and move it into New Jersey is like taking the Bike Race out of Manayunk. Like defacing the Rocky Statue. Like imploding the Spectrum. Oh wait. We're actually going to do that.

Mummers Parade

Here's some of what you missed at the Mummers Parade.

Star of David on the move

  • The city has proposed moving Police Headquarters to a vacant historic building in West Philadelphia. It would take $70 million to renovate the building, the former home of Provident Mutual Life Insurance Co. 'Cuz the City of Philadelphia has that kind of cash just layin' around, right?
  • In Camden, police officers are spending more time making arrests for minor offenses such as public drinking, playing loud music and violating curfew. When they arrive at a crowded corner, officers sometimes arrest as many people as they can, even if half of the charges are for so-called quality-of-life offenses. The strategy is part of a general crackdown on crime that began about five months ago, when Police Chief Scott Thomson assumed control of a department scrambling to suppress Camden’s rising homicide rate and gang presence.

  • A man outside at a New Year's party in East Germantown, confronted by police for firing his gun into the air, turned the gun on the officers, and was in turn fired upon. Although neither police nor the gunman were hurt, three people inside the house where the party was going on were struck by stray bullets. A similar incident happened only ten minutes later in North Philadelphia. Police asked men to surrender their weapons, and instead they fled and one turned his gun on the officers, and was subsequently shot in the ankle. In all, three were arrested and four injured.
  • What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

  • Speaking of the police department, the Inquirer has an interesting article about a Philadelphia defense lawyer who's helping local police departments in a variety of ways - most recently by giving them motorcycles.
  • When I go to the ballet, or really to any other dance performance, I must admit that I often get bored watching the pretty, dainty women dance across the stage en pointe. I'd much rather watch the men: for them, dance is a sport as much as it is an artform – and when they jump, they seem to stay suspended in the air forever. I never get tired of watching men dancing. Which is why I was so excited that the theme of the first week of this season's was, well, "Men Dancing."

We don't know about you, but it's friggin cold out there. Well, not for some of you. It seems as though places that are supposed to be cold are warm and places that are supposed to be warm are cold. Or maybe that's just us. Either way, we're freezing.

At about 1PM on Saturday, I was walking down Walnut Street, towards 20th, post brunch, with friends. Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a horse. I thought right. Barreling south on 20th was a man on a horse. And not just any man on a horse, but a man in chaps and a leather fringed vest, with cowboy hat bouncing off his back (it wasn’t sunny enough to use to for eye protection yet?) - you get the picture. I’ve never seen the Mummers Parade, so I asked one of the friends with me, who had seen it that morning, if this man was in the parade. She said “no.” Then we cursed ourselves for not having our cameras in our hands at all times.

My day was packed on Saturday, but I live 100 feet off of Broad Street (all of these pictures were taken from my corner), so I figured, what the hell, I'll wake up a little earlier so that I can see my first-ever Mummers Parade. It was a gorgeous day (yes, I know, Global Warming=bad, but who doesn't love pretty weather?), and so I simply had to take some photos. Full-sized versions of all of them are available at Phillyist's Mummers 2007 photoset on Flickr.
