On Saturday, members of the Philadelphia Chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), set off to march twenty-five miles from the National Constitution Center to Valley Forge National Historical Park, "to show support for veterans and service members testifying at Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan," an IVAW event occurring in Washington, D.C. March 13-16. The event gets its name from a quote by Thomas Paine, who said that winter soldiers are those who stand up for their country even in its darkest hours, and will be an opportunity for veterans who served in both locations to give "an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground" in the Middle Eastern war zones.

Fun around town, for $10 or less:

  • Four young men from Mantua were arrested yesterday for severely beating another man in the Citizens Bank Park parking lot during an August Phillies game. Their alleged victim had to be hospitalized with severe head injuries. The motive for the beating has not been released. The men were held last night in a Gloucester County jail awaiting extradition to Philadelphia.
  • As a little girl, I had my share of Barbies. My mom got rid of them a long time ago, but I still love those dolls, feminist sensibilities be damned. (At some point during , a very logical explanation is offered as to why Barbies have such impossible waists: just because the doll is small, doesn't mean that the textiles used to dress her are any less bulky. To give the doll more human proportions when she's not dressed would be to make her look heavier when she is. And nobody likes a fat doll, right?) Many of my childhood memories can be tied into my early-80s Barbies and Barbie accessories; for some reason, my Peaches 'N' Cream Barbie and a hot pink, metallic Corvette especially stand out.

This afternoon the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue will be the site of a conference hosted by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and entitled Islam and the West. It's being held in honor of the 90th birthday of Professor Bernard Lewis, a noted scholar of the Middle East and currently Princeton's Cleveland E. Dodge Professor Emeritus of Near Eastern Studies. Showing up for the birthday party/deep political discussion will be plenty of other experts on the Middle East and Islam, not to mention celebrities like former host of CNN's "Inside Politics" Judy Woodruff, and such luminaries of Western politics as Senator Joseph Biden, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and Mr. Darth Vader himself, Vice President Dick Cheney. Mr. Cheney isn't exactly going to be hanging around having drinks with everybody afterwards, though; according to his schedule, he's arriving at the Philadelphia International Airport at 11:15AM, speaking at the Hyatt at 12:10PM, and leaving from the airport again at 12:50PM. Wow. He may actually have to fold time or something to pull that off. Well, either that, or deliver a speech that's only three words long. Which we hear he's been known to do in the past...
