Fun around town, for $10 or less:
Phillyist's favorite birthday present this year was a pair of socks that had sock monkeys on them. We tried to engage our partner in a discussion of the possible philosophical implications of having socks with monkeys made of socks on them, but he didn't take the bait. In any event, one may say we are predisposed to sock monkeys, which is why we can't stop giggling with joy over Mew Gallery's upcoming Sock and Awe exhibit running this Saturday through January 25, featuring (you guessed it) art celebrating the monkey of the sock.
It's time again for First Friday. What's that you say? You don't like the looks of tonight's weather forecast? Silly readers! A little cold and wet never killed anyone (well, pneumonia and tuberculosis aside, at least). And besides, all those warm bodies packed into a little art gallery, accompanied by free wine? You'll be warm for sure, in no time flat! Here are a few places where we suggest keeping dry. Before jumping on the...
Considering that Phillyist needs a new car, we're a little disappointed that we just gave up knitting (and donated the accoutrement to a worthy cause even). Scion is sponsoring a DIY contest, Craft My Ride, which challenges the crafty among us to design a car accessory (which they helpfully define for us) and get the chance to win a 2008 Scion xD five-door subcompact. You have until October 22 to submit images and a description of your handmade doodad; finalists will mail in an example of their design. We aren't overburdened with the creativity ourselves, but they helpfully point out that keychains, seat covers, floor mats, and steering wheel covers are all fair game. Maybe a knitted hula girl bobbly? A dashboard cell phone caddy?
Head on down to Mew Gallery tomorrow night to help them welcome Confections: Photography, an exhibition by Amy Stevens. Seems Ms. Stevens has an obsession with cake imagery and a fetish for color; while the latter is certainly an asset to most any artist, those of us with a baking problem can certainly see the artistic benefit of the former. The project started as a celebration for her 30th birthday; the idea was she'd bake thirty cakes and photograph them. She didn't quite make it to the goal by b-day, but the early process (including a kit from Martha Stewart) helped her rebel against the idea of food "perfection," and allowed her to be "as grotesque and amazing as possible." The current exhibit is the result, with the creations matched to often outrageous fabrics and backgrounds.

Once a week, Phillyist will be visiting a different block in town and letting you know what's discovered there. This may or may not be an excuse to validate random wandering - either way, if you've got suggestions for places to check out, send them along! Though I don't get to the Italian Market as much as I'd like to, this block is one I assumed I knew inside and out. Pizza at Lorenzo's and...
