The Phillyist HQ is closing up shop today because it's awfully hard to blog from a barbecue. We'll be back tomorrow with our regularly scheduled posts. Enjoy your long weekend!
It wasn't even a year ago that I left the post of editor and wrote my first farewell to Phillyist. I've been sticking around as a contributor since then, writing Whiz of the Web and Photoist as often as I could, but now I've finally decided to call it quits completely. So it's time for another farewell post! I'll make this one short and sweet. Thanks to the staff and readers of Phillyist for a great 4 years! I've really enjoyed the opportunity to write for such a large and friendly audience, and I hope you've enjoyed reading what I had to say. If you have, and you'd like to continue reading it, you can follow me on Twitter, and/or check out my personal blog. Thanks again, and much luck and happiness to you all. Be seeing you.
Well hello there. You mean you're sitting at your computer right now? Whatever for? Didn't you know that the whole world (or at least, the world of America) has decided to make the Third of July nearly as important as the Fourth? That means you're supposed to be down the shore, or participating in Welcome America festivities or, um, getting drunk.
Just a quick reminder that Phillyist is still looking for new writers. Full information on what we're looking for can be found here. We'll be accepting applications through the end of the month, but the sooner you get yours in, the better. What are you waiting for, anyway?
We're taking one more day off for the holiday season before we launch full into 2009 content. See you tomorrow!
Perhaps you've noticed something a little different about us today. We're looking a little fitter, a little hipper, a little more ready to face 2009—perhaps even a little more 2.0. That's because a new layout has been introduced to all of the Gothamist sites (including Torontoist, which we're happy to report will continue on into 2009!), and we think it looks swell. A few things are different (to see tags, for example, you need to click on the little icon that looks like a tag; recommends are processed if you click the star and comments can be made by clicking the dialogue bubble), but most things are the same. While we transition over to our new format, which is powered by an all new version of Movable Type, we just ask for your patience: things may not work as they're supposed to at first, but give it time and we should be right as rain. If you notice anything especially strange, though, please let Jill and Angela know and they'll see if they can figure it out. Thanks for reading, and happy '09!
Barring any breaking news (or a legal agreement stating that we won't run a review of a movie until today, which is why there's one other entry dated today on the site), Phillyist will be taking December 25 off to spend time with our loved ones. We'll also be rather content-lite tomorrow.
Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2009 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know!
We'd like to thank Chris Illuminati at phillyBurbs.com for calling us one of Philadelphia's ten best websites, where we're joined by such local luminaries as Philadelphia Will Do, Foobooz, Geekadelphia, and Overheard in Philly. Chris has promised us a month's supply of home-churned butter as a prize. We need it soon, Chris: we just invited Paula Deen for dinner!
...All of you. And to show you just how thankful we are, we're giving you the next couple of days off from reading the site. We want you to step away from your computers and spend time this holiday weekend with your loved ones. We'll be back to our regular schedule once our tryptophan-tastic comas wear off.
Ages past, in the distant, hazy days of February, 2006, an ultra-violent, editorial junta arose from amongst the staff of Phillyist and overthrew the man who was the dictator at that time, one John "Murder-Face" Carroll. The junta consisted of myself; the Great and Powerful Sarcasmo (AKA Star Foster); and She of the Many Names, the deadly manners maven/grammarian/ninja Jillian Ashley Blair Ivey. The junta's reign of terror began immediately, with the old guard put to the wall and a new group of vicious writer/killers brought in to take their place. But in the intervening years, my grip on power slipped, and now I'm not surprised to find myself writing this post while hiding, in disguise, in an undisclosed location (one of the city's many Starbucks), awaiting my inevitable capture and execution by the forces of a new power...
Well, we're only over by one, but still! You may remember that in July we opened our own Twitter account, @Phillyist. Well, since @anniemal welcomed us as our first follower, we've accumulated, as of this post's publication, 125 additional followers from all over the city. What started out as a new and convenient way for us to beam our RSS feed into cyberspace and to your mobile phones has quickly become an opportunity to do something far more engaging. So consider signing up for your own Twitter account and we'll promise more live updates from actual people. After all, it's the people behind the tweets that make Twitter such a powerful tool for communication and discussion.
The Gothamist team is tinkering around on the internets, trying to make things better, so our comments are temporarily out of order. Please be patient; we'll have them back up soon!
As you may have already noticed, Phillyist is celebrating the holiday by not posting today. Here's hoping you're not doing anything too strenuous, either.
This guy in the photo sure thinks he's an artist. What about you? Are you a local Philadelphia ArtIST and want our readers to know about you and your work? If so, please click here and tell us a little about yourself. Beret not required.
If you're anything like us, you procrastinate. You may have seen that we were looking for new writers, but said to yourselves: "Meh, I've got plenty of time. I'll apply later." So we just wanted to take a moment to remind you that the deadline for new writer applications is this Friday, February 29*.
We already know you dig Phillyist. You're here, aren't you?
. Both evenings are a guaranteed good time, so remember to sign up today!
So, has anyone tried to enter the contests that this Phillyist posted recently? If so, you may have gotten a nasty error message. What went wrong, we don't know, but we've replaced the buggy entry forms with new ones, and now the entries are coming through as they should. So if you tried to enter our Paper Rival giveaway or the Philly Sports Club membership contest and got an error message, give it another try now and it should work fine.
You may have noticed, in the last day or so, that your profile has disappeared.
Hey, it's a whole different year now! Awesome. But, uh... yeah, we're gonna go back to sleep. See you all tomorrow!
Two pretty big new changes are being rolled out to Phillyist over the next few days. Changes are good! Tags! Instead of being confined to narrow categories, every post is now tagged with specific tags – things that help you find specific kinds of posts (say, all of our Photoist posts), or browse broader categories easily (say, all of our music posts). Very soon, our categories will all be converted into tags save for a...
The day has arrived, and in a few hours, it will be time to [responsibly] imbibe alcoholic beverages with the staff of your favorite blog. A blog that just happens to be the 47th-most important blog in the universe. (That's why we're throwing this little shindig!) Meet us downstairs at St. Stephen's Green at 6PM tonight for: Open bar featuring well drinks, house wines, and selected drafts (until we close our tab). $3 Yards...
Well hey there, readers! As you might recall, we're having a party tomorrow. You haven't forgotten, have you? Well, in case you have, or in case you just weren't sure if you wanted to go and you needed some enticement, we have some details for you: There will be free food. Come and get your pre-dinner snack on! But keep in mind, once the food is gone, it's gone. So try to get to...
Remember last month, when some math whiz at Carnegie Mellon decided that Phillyist was the 47th-most important blog... in the universe? Well, the staff of Phillyist got to thinking that we had you to thank for that, so we wanted to buy you all a drink. And then, we got to thinking that 47 is only five away from the meaning of life, and we decided that not only did we want to buy...
As none other than the New York Times recently reported, Philadelphia's newspaper situation is experiencing a bit of an upswing, or at least a comfortable plateau, compared to the state of things during the vomit-inducing dissipation of Knight-Ridder's ability to hang on to the Inquirer and the Daily News, not to mention the 30 other papers it was forced to sell off last year. Publisher Brian Tierney, whose Philadelphia Media Holdings, LLC acquired the Philly...
We here at Phillyist have been thinking long and hard about resurrecting the Frugal Fun Alert. For one, many of us used it regularly to plan our outings, especially on weeknights, and we’re basically self-serving creatures. For another, we’ve gotten lots of feedback from readers that they miss it and want it back. And, frankly, it was an awesome post containing info we should provide. But it’s a post that requires a lot of attention, and as we spent time building up our staff page the last few months it fell to the wayside. And, without getting too psychological, we perhaps were hesitant to take on a regular post that had been handled, incredibly well, by Star Foster.
