Wednesday's event on South Broad Street was as much a six-block-long performance as it was a lighting display. Even before the brief speeches by three of the event's organizers, the Avenue of the Arts was a circus of performers on stilts or in costume. Afterwards, the street became even more active as five bands started playing and the crowds lined up to purchase food from the outdoor stands set up by nearby restaurants. Terra......

Besides offering a concise and appropriate representation of the times, some quotes are so incisive that they make a step back from the clarity of the moment nearly impossible. “The Iranian government should remember what is happening in China. Nearly 30 thousand people are currently employed to control Chinese weblogs."      - Iranian blogger's response to new laws requiring websites and blogs to be registered with the government When the people in Tehran think you're worse......

Altar Boyz takes two things that I generally hate—boy bands and Christian rock—and makes them, not only enjoyable, but actually likable! And lucky for you, you've still got till Sunday to catch a production at the Merriam Theater! Altar Boyz doesn't have a plot as much as a concept. You, the audience member, are in the audience of the Altar Boyz' final concert on their tour. They sing, they dance, they try to save your......

This week's quote comes from something Stella Adler once said about theatre: “The word theatre comes from the Greeks. It means the seeing place. It is the place people come to see the truth about life and the social situation.” We don't think that needs much more explanation. Now, on with the listings! Prayers of Sherkin - We all know why the Shakers all but died out (Wikipedia tells us there are some left in......

Here it is, a week late, a lyric from the actual song “White Christmas.” (We never did get our shopping done, though. This year we’re celebrating Chanukah, for convenience.) Now, on with the listings! Gentlemen Volunteers - World War I seems an unlikely play setting, but when has Pig Iron ever said no to a challenging topic? The play is being produced at the Drexel Armory, January 4-22. Tickets are available through Smarttix. Collected Stories......

Week two of our White Christmas quote-fest – if you can call it that. This week’s quote comes from the song “Count Your Blessings.” That’s right. We still haven’t started our holiday shopping – so we’re choosing another non-holiday song. Now, on with the listings! STOMP - Who knew brooms and cigarette lighters could be so musical? At the Merriam Theater, December 20-31. For tickets and information, see Ticketmaster. The Philly Fan - They’re a......

Not many new shows this week, but plenty to see nonetheless! Tuesdays With Morrie - We like sentimental tragi-comedies. This one, based on the novel of the same name, happens to be one of our favorites. November 1-6 at the Merriam Theater. For tickets and information, see the Broadway Across America website. Endgame - And you thought Waiting for Godot was hard to follow. Playing at the Triangle Theatre through November 20. For tickets and......

Phillyist loves a good singer/songwriter, so last night we made our way to the elegant, historic Merriam Theater (250 S. Broad Street) to check out Sarah Blasko, who is currently touring to promote her debut album, The Overature and the Underscore. Blasko was the opening act, so when she was introduced by none other than the headliner himself, Ray Lamontagne, we knew we were in for something special. Lamontagne seemed almost shy as he praised......
