What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.

The Inquirer takes a closer look at the Philadelphia policeman who was shot the day before the shooting of Chuck Cassidy, by a gunman who then fled and ultimately drowned in the Schuylkill. They also put the incident in the larger context of criminals in Philadelphia getting released from jail only to commit more crimes and be arrested again, over and over. Meanwhile, another Philadelphia police officer was injured this weekend, this time by...

We'd heard Matt Duke's name before (like when Phillyist Meghan's sister covered him for us), but this Phillyist's first encounter with the young Jersey-bred singer-songwriter was a few months ago at the WXPN-hosted Philly Local Lonely Hearts Club Band. Duke, in a pair of crazy patchwork-embellished stovepipe pants (each leg was probably wider than his whole body – you can kind of see them here), completely stole the stage with his performance of "When I'm 64." We left the World Cafe Live that night sure of two things: that we'd had an awesome time, and that we needed to see more of Matt Duke.

  • Police are saying that 18-year-old Charles T. "Chuckie" Meyers was driving in South Philly on Saturday when he shot and killed a bicycle-riding 14-year-old boy when the boy wouldn't get out of his way fast enough. But friends and relatives of Meyers can't believe he would do such a thing.

  • So, how about this mayoral race? Who would have figured a month ago that Milton Street would successfully defeat challenges to his place on the ballot (though admittedly for a position as Council at-large, and not as mayor) and would be preparing to go out campaigning, while Brady sat in a courtroom, desperately trying to keep his name on that same ballot (yes, he went to court yesterday, and Mayorpalooza was blogging it; there should be a decision next week, although regardless of what that decision is, there will be an appeal).
  • My favorite person in Center City used to be Mr. Maryland, a.k.a. the flower delivery man who spent his workday walking through Rittenhouse, singing the praises of Baltimore and Silver Spring, while cursing off Philly (which I did not condone) and people who got in his way (which I did condone, because many of them were my rude customers). For a week last October, Mr. Maryland wandered about silently and my world was shattered. When he started singing that which he normally screamed, I slowly rebuilt my heart.

  • The recent surge in violence in the city just may have something to do with our little gang problem.
  • We're pleased to note that neighboring town Camden is officially no longer America's Most Dangerous City. In fact, it sounds like the new number one is likely to be nowhere near us - it'll probably be St. Louis or Detroit.
  • The Philadelphia Zoo, unable to provide their elephants with the space they require, is giving them up to Maryland & Tennessee. Now our old zoo key is extra redundant.

It's probably usually a relatively good idea to avoid the Schuylkill River and the Wissahickon Creek, but it's currently even more important, due to the fact that there was a "toxic discharge" of some kind - or at least, that's the graphic way they put it on XPN this morning - which killed a bunch of fish in Montgomery County, and might poison you or your pets as well. To be safe, the city has issued a health advisory and they're telling everybody to avoid swimming, splashing, fishing, boating, rowing, or generally doing anything at all "in the Wissahickon and in the Schuylkill in the area below where it meets the Wissahickon" until further notice. Drinking and bathing in the city water is still safe (or at least as safe as it always was), but the fate of tomorrow's Schuylkill Navy Regatta and next weekend's triathlon (which includes a swimming portion, obviously) are in question. Check for updates at Philly RiverCast, or call the city Water Department at 215-685-6300 if you have questions.

There's a whole wide world out there, and here's the proof:
