How about this unseasonably cool weather? Saturday night was pretty much a perfect night for a concert. So our only concern heading into the Maroon 5/Counting Crows show was whether the performers would measure up to the ideal setting.

If you're anything like this Phillyist, you abhor the Olive Gardens and Applebees of the world, and opt for the local "mom and pop" shops with their homemade foods and servers that know you by name. The shore is the best place to get that "mom and pop" vibe. Because, with the short four-month season and location, location, location, it's not easy for chains to justify setting up shop down the shore. Check out this article from the New York Times that explains more.
When we go to see a band that's been around for awhile, we usually find ourselves excited to hear them play our old favorites (because the new crap they've been putting out just doesn't measure up), or we're excited to hear the new material (because it took the band a couple albums to find their stride, but now they're putting out really killer stuff). But with Counting Crows (MySpace), we're excited to hear everything, the new and the old.
- concert to get us out of this funk. So thank you thank you thank you to Eric Hutchinson and Matt Duke for giving us that show.
AOL, a Live 8 partner, has announced a broadcast lineup for its online coverage of Live 8. Considering how chaotic Live 8 planning has been, this could be flipped and reversed and scrapped entirely by Saturday morning, but it gives us a first glimpse at how Saturday might go down. You know, aside from the predictions of large riots. And no, that's not a Kaiser Chiefs joke, but it works out as one in retrospect, doesn't it?

Brad Pitt can't keep his hands off... Philly, it seems. Us Weekly announced that the Mr. and Mrs. Smith star will be joining Mr. Will Smith at Live 8 this weekend. And Pitt's possibly pregnant friend Angelina Jolie? It's rumored that she will be on hand for the festivities, but nothing's been confirmed. In addition to this big, um, addition, various outlets have confirmed that Kanye West, whose debut album, The College Dropout, was one of the best selling discs of 2004, will perform at Philadelphia's Live 8 show. Sound checks start tomorrow morning and will resume on Saturday morning, even as people fill up the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. We hear Maroon 5 totally kills during sound check. Finally, rumors still swirl around acts that may or may not show up in Philadelphia, including Bruce Springsteen, Weezer, Bob Dylan, and Ludacris. Some call it anticipation, but we call it "Um, they still haven't finalized all of this?" Philadelphians can shut up about one issue, though: the city finally signed its contract with Live 8 organizers yesterday. The city will receive $350,000 from the concert organizers. Once the concert is over, we here at Phillyist will turn our heads with the rest of Philadelphia from the toilets to the Mayor's office: "How exactly will he blow all of this cash?" we'll ask.
