Proofreading Philly

Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar.

We apologize for the lateness of this post—our review-in-photos of the 2009 Philadelphia Flower Show, themed "Bella Italia"—but we had too many photos to shelve the post. So we hope you'll indulge us for a few minutes and enjoy this selection of photos from the show, whittled down to 37 from nearly 200. (And be glad we're not making you sit through the rest!)

This was the scene at the GameStop in the Gallery a little before 8AM this morning as folks lined up to get their copy of Madden NFL '09, which gets released today.

  • "The traditional battle of the budget opens today with the first in a series of City Council hearings on Mayor Nutter's five-year plan."
  • Editor Jim found this gem of a misspelling in [semi]-precious metal, and he writes:

When I first saw that SEPTA was conducting a campaign to cut down cell phone conversation on their trains, I have to say I was skeptical. No amount of pandering, I thought, would stop passengers from making incredibly urgent calls to talk about the prior night’s debauchery or the conflict at work that only a complete narcissist could spend more than five seconds thinking about. But, alas, I have to say the signs with the juvenile clip art seem to be working. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve definitely heard less high-maintenance drama queens whining about why the demise of their one-month relationship is the end of the world. Makes me think that SEPTA might want to get the five-year-olds at their advertising agency started on some other ideas. Campaign slogans have been provided.

    Dear SEPTA:

  • An R6 train rear-ended an R5 train (we didn't know they ran on the same track!) in a tunnel near Market East yesterday. There were no fatalities, but at least thirty-five people were injured. The cause of the collision is not currently known.
  • This Monday morning, I was at the ticket counter in Market East, preparing for some quality Regional Rail time. There's a Men’s bathroom to the left of the ticket window.

This Phillyist lives a block and a half from the downtown Rita's (you know, the one that actually has indoor seating), and even though we don't go there very often, it saddened us to see them close up shop for the winter, complete with window sign reading "We'll miss you!" We would walk by every day, thinking of just how sad and lonely it looked in there. But yesterday, we were happy to see that the sign had been taken down, and a new one was in its place, telling all passers-by that Rita's would re-open Thursday (as in, tomorrow). We assume that the rest of the Rita's locations in the area will be opening tomorrow as well.

The Reading Terminal Holiday Railroad Display is up and out for viewing again, from now through the end of the year, 10AM to 6PM. You'll find it under the escalator on the ground floor of the Reading Terminal, just inside the 12th and Market entrance, above the Gallery at Market East. This year's display is not as busy, exciting, and interactive as past years' have been, but it's still festive and fun. Click the picture above for more photos of the display on Flickr.

I've been debating what to do with the photos I've been taking on the Philly streets. It doesn't seem right to just slip them into our Photoist column every once in a while, as we get plenty of beautiful submissions to that from our readers. I thought about starting a separate staff column, but that didn't seem right, either. Then I realized, we're a blog: we don't need a set schedule or a separate column to put up photos. We can just put them up, whenever! So here you go. This is a photo I took of a light hanging from the tunnel that runs between Market East Station and the Reading Terminal Market, on Filbert between 11th and 12th. Hope you like it.

Nothing can melt Phillyist's cold, sarcastic, postmodern blogger facade faster than a holiday model train set. There's just something about that perfect little dream world with the tiny, wonderful machines running through it that makes us all warm and nostalgic, and brings back the goofy, grinning kid in us. That's why we were excited as a little tyke on Christmas morn to find the Reading Terminal Holiday Railroad Display back again this year. If you saw last year's display (pictured above), you still need to come by and see this one, because it's completely different. This time there are two waterfalls, a tunnel, an elevated trolley, and ever so much other fun stuff!

SEPTA has announced its 'Plan B' in case the Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 234 and United Transportation Union Local 1594 decide to strike on October 31. The SEPTA website instructs riders to be on the look out for "brochures, leaflets and special schedules" available shortly at stations and customer service locations. You can also see what's what on the SEPTA website.

If NYC has an unsubstantiated terror threat against their subways, so must we all share in the paranoia, er, wealth. Due to police activity Market East regional train station is shut down, effectively also cutting off service at 30th Street Station and Suburban Station.
