Dear Philadelphia:

I am not a big person. As such, I can't usually eat a full restaurant-sized portion, and nearly every meal that I eat out will actually end up as two. That's why the Unemployment Diet worked so well for me. I just made a conscious decision not to force myself to finish my meals out, and voila! My food budget was cut in half, and all I had to do was be willing to take home a doggie bag and eat the leftovers later.
This one comes straight from Ma Phillyist (aka Mamaist, aka Mommy, aka Mom, aka Mother, but only when I'm mad at her), who's been visiting the past few days. She's the one who always stressed the importance of manners to me. She also thinks that, in spite of my weekly manners column, five years of living on the East Coast has taught me a few manners that she wishes I hadn't picked up.
Ma Phillyist is visiting later this week. We're totally psyched to see her—it's been since the holidays—but unfortunately, her visit coincides with the BlogPhiladelphia "unconference," which we do plan to be at. Mom assures us that it's okay, she can keep herself busy on Friday. But the problem is, she's done most of the busy-keeping activities in the city that we can think of: she's been to the Art Museum, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and a slew of other "major" tourist attractions. She's not a big shopper, and anyway, she'll be car-less, so sending her to King of Prussia for a day isn't really an option. So, what Phillyist wants to know is: where should we dispatch our mother so that she'll be busy and entertained for a full day without us?
Hey there, Philly:
No matter how perfectly you try to calculate the amount of turkey-per-person, you always end up with leftovers. And there's really only so much leftover turkey, or so many turkey sandwiches, that a person can eat. You're stuck for ideas, but you don't want all that food to go to waste. What follows is Ma Phillyist's surefire way to make sure that the leftover bird gets eaten—and that people will like it. (The recipe works really well with chicken, too, if you decide to make it again but don't want to mess with the turkey.)
While we sit here in Philly praying for some rain to cool things down a little, Ma and Pa Phillyist are sitting back home waiting for the desert to stop flooding. This could be the apocalypse, folks. But at least there are pictures.
Foodsday Tuesday is a weekly post about all things food, but we recently realized it's been a while since we provided you with a recipe. Like six weeks. Maybe longer. And that made us feel all guilty. So we've got a recipe for you this week, and it's a good one. One of Ma Phillyist's summertime specialties, and an easy one at that. (It requires patience, but not much work.) As with most other Foodsday Tuesday recipes, the specific amount of the ingredients isn't critical. Feel free to experiment!
