Like most of you, I'm sure, Phillyist has been gratified to see Sen. Rick Santorum make the long, occasionally hilarious journey to the private sector. Bob Casey has led in the polls since the race began, the national GOP is already planning on a loss in Pennsylvania, and Santorum himself is pinning his last hopes on the critical WWE Smackdown contingent. Meanwhile, when the GM told Lynn Swann to make a Political Aptitude check, the dude didn't exactly roll a natural twenty.

We're pleased to note that neighboring town Camden is officially no longer America's Most Dangerous City. In fact, it sounds like the new number one is likely to be nowhere near us - it'll probably be St. Louis or Detroit.
It's political endorsement time! Perhaps unsurprisingly, a number of local papers are picking the Dems. Good old liberal media!
If you missed the final debate in Philly Tuesday night between PA gubernatorial candidates Lynn Swann and Ed Rendell...well, it sounds like you didn't miss much. They basically just said all the same old stuff. We suspect Dan Savage's talk during a fundraiser for Philadelphians Against Santorum at the Troc - which happened that same night - was a lot more interesting.
Speaking of local political races, the Inquirer has a fun run-down of the various campaigns. We particularly like the first bit, about Rendell losing weight to stay in shape, and his story about the Pittsburgh cabbie who, when asked about Lynn Swann, said, "Too pretty; I'm voting for the ugly guy." "Hey," Rendell said, "whatever works."
We're just going to pull a direct quote for this one: "An Atlantic City man has been sentenced to three years of probation and community service at an animal shelter for beating a duck." Apparently on March 15th he was in the parking lot of the Fox Chase development where he worked when he decided it would be a good idea to kick a mallard and beat it with a broom. Maybe it was quacking really loudly and he couldn't concentrate? Anyway, the man has been ordered to pay $276 toward the duck's care, and the duck is now doing quite well, thank you very much.
Looks like the region's flu season for this year is going to be a mild one, but the CDC warns it's not over yet.

This has been a bad week for sleeping. A fun week. But a very very bad week for sleeping. At least we're not too far behind in the -ist-a-verse. Not today, at any rate.

Pennsylvania politics are just downright entertaining. If politicians aren't voting themselves gigantic pay raises in the middle of the night, then Philly city council members and various political wonks are being indicted. If state reps aren't calling each other 'crackers', then gubernatorial hopefuls are firing their campaign managers for referring to the African-American candidate as ''the rich white guy in the campaign.'

- 13-year-old Naiym Muhammed is being charged as an adult in the Sunday fire in Germantown that killed a 17-year-old girl and critically injured her mother. The charges against Muhammed include murder, arson, conspiracy. More charges are expected. Police say the fire was set in retribution over a small debt.
- Some local Dems are finding it a little harder to support Bob Casey, Jr. in the up-coming primary. Both Casey and PA Governor Ed Rendell announced their support for Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court. Many are concerned about how a woman's right to choose her own medical care might be affected should Alito's nomination be approved by the full Senate. PA Senator Arlen Specter, a self-proclaimed pro-choice Republican, voted to approve Alito's nomination during judiciary commitee hearings.
- Apparently, the general public may simply be too stupid to understand the difference between "Ben Station" and "Penn Station". We're told tourism officials in Philly are wary of renaming 30th Street to honor Ben Franklin because there might be some confusion. From what we hear, there's already confusion, so what's the difference? It really doesn't matter, because the Pew Charitable Trusts has decided not to pursue the name change.
