  • The city is urging residents not to take their Christmas trees to the curb. The city hopes that residents will take the effort to pack up their trees - and maybe those of a neighbor or two as well - and take them to be recycled at one of three city collection areas: 63rd Street and Passyunk Avenue, in Southwest; State Road and Ashburner Street, in Northeast; Domino Lane near Umbria Street, in Roxborough. Two neighborhood groups also will be accepting trees for recycling - The Northern Liberties Neighbors Association will accept trees at Liberty Lands Park, near 3rd and Poplar Streets, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Passyunk Square Civic Association will take trees Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at Gold Star Park, on Wharton between 6th and 7th.

  • A 16-year-old has been arrested in the case of the teen who was killed for his dirt bike. The suspect will be charged as an adult with murder and robbery. Help from the community led to the arrest.
  • More news about toxic gas leaks! The Oxford Valley Mall in Langhorne was closed early yesterday morning when employees of the J.C. Penney's started showing symptoms of exposure to carbon monoxide. Eight people were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated and released. Testing revealed that there was indeed quite a lot of carbon monoxide floating around in Penney's, caused by the collapse of a chimney on the roof. That store will remain closed until at least today, although the rest of the mall reopened early yesterday afternoon.
  • Neighbors of the Barnes Foundation, who were once all for it moving out of their neighborhood, are now joining county commissioners and Lower Merion Township in their efforts to stop it. Yet another lawsuit may soon be filed in a last ditch attempt to keep the Foundation where it is.
  • The Friends Center at 15th and Cherry is getting a $12.5-million green renovation that will free it of its reliance on fossil fuels. The renovation includes a vegetated roof - the largest such roof in Philadelphia, and the first in Center City.

    It's been a while since any of the Sixers got in legal trouble, so I guess we're due: forward Lee Nailon remains in prison in Lower Merion right now on charges that he assaulted his wife. Arraignment on the simple assault and harrassment charges is expected today.
